Qualifications and experience are important, but there are plenty of skills that don’t always fit neatly into a CV.

Maybe you’re a natural problem-solver, great at communicating with people, incredibly organised or someone who stays calm when things don’t go to plan.

These skills can be developed through work, education, volunteering, hobbies and everyday life - and they can tell an employer a lot about how you approach a role.

So don’t underestimate the skills that aren’t written down. 👏

WHAT ARE WE SEEING?

We asked Lucy, our Associate Director, what she’s seeing in the market…

“The ‘perfect CV’ isn’t necessarily the perfect candidate.”

Transferable skills, personality and culture fit can be just as important as ticking every box.

The recruitment market feels quite mixed at the moment. Businesses seem more cautious about hiring, with some choosing to recruit directly first.

Candidates are still moving, but salary isn’t always the main driver. Flexibility, progression, culture and the overall opportunity are coming up more and more in conversations.

And sometimes the candidate who looks perfect on paper isn’t necessarily the best fit, while someone with transferable skills, the right attitude and the right personality for the team could be.

That’s where conversations matter. Understanding what a business really needs and what a candidate is looking for goes beyond simply matching a CV to a job description.

It might not be the role itself - it could be how the opportunity is being presented.

If candidates can’t quickly understand what the role involves, what you’re looking for and what’s expected of them, they may simply move on.

2️⃣ THE SALARY & BENEFITS AREN’T CLEAR

Candidates want to know what the opportunity offers. Being transparent about salary, benefits and working arrangements can help your vacancy stand out.

3️⃣ TOO MANY ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

A long list of “essential” requirements can put good candidates off applying. Consider which skills are genuinely essential and which could be developed through training.

A great vacancy needs more than a great job title.

It needs to clearly communicate why someone should want to work for your business.

AI IN RECRUITMENT — WHAT ARE THE RISKS?

We recently looked at some of the potential positives of AI in recruitment, but it’s important to look at the other side too.

AI can save time and support recruiters, but relying on it too heavily could create challenges - from potential bias and privacy concerns to great candidates being overlooked because they don’t perfectly match an algorithm.

And perhaps most importantly, recruitment is about people.

A CV can tell you about someone’s experience, but it doesn’t always tell you about their potential, personality, ambitions or whether they’ll be the right fit for a business.

That’s why we believe technology should support the recruitment process, not replace the human element. 🤝
