There are three key stages to consider, when coaching individuals into Employment:
1. Building Relationship - Establishing a strong foundation between coach and client is crucial. At times, you will need to confront clients on challenging topics, but this requires a base of trust built through prior conversations. If you skip this step and immediately address obstacles and concerns, you risk losing the client's trust and respect. I've frequently observed situations where this initial phase is overlooked, resulting in a loss of client confidence.
2. Overcoming Barriers - After establishing relationship, the next step is to pinpoint the major obstacles to employment that the individual faces. Some may lack education around certain employability skills such as navigating an interview or building a CV, others might face personal challenges they need to address such as settling into a team or managing a disability, while some individuals simply need to develop more self-belief and confidence. This stage often takes the most time to navigate, and itβs common to find that as soon as one hurdle is overcome, another one emerges.
3. Securing Suitable Employment - This is the final piece of the puzzle. Once the client has gained confidence in your advice, navigated past their individual obstacles, and built a solid foundation in employability, it's time to secure their next position. While job hunting might appear straightforward, for some individuals within our community, locating the right opportunity can be extremely daunting. It can be challenging to find an employer who is both understanding and supportive or a position that aligns with their lifestyle needs. Often, this is the stage where assistance is lacking, as many are trained with necessary skills but then left without support during their transition into a new career.
