Sometimes when recruiting, you need to look beyond what's written on the CV.

Anyone can see job titles, dates of employment and a list of responsibilities.

The real skill is spotting the hidden signs.

Why did someone move every two years but suddenly stay five years in one role?

Why did they take a step backwards in title?

Why does a CV show progression in one company but repeated short stints elsewhere?

What happened during the gaps?

What achievements are missing that should be there?

Most importantly, what questions should these signs prompt you to ask during the interview?

A CV tells you where someone has been.

A good interview uncovers why.

The best recruiters don't just match skills to a job description. They read between the lines, identify the story behind the CV and help clients understand the person behind the document.

Like a brand-new campervan in your driveway, it can be hard to spot.

We've noticed a real shift in hiring habits over the last 12 months.

Historically, when businesses needed recruitment support, the first call was often to one of the large national agencies. The big names. The companies with offices across the country.

More recently, however, we're seeing an increasing number of clients choosing to partner with smaller, local agencies, often on an exclusive basis.

Why?

Because they want a recruitment partner, not just a supplier.

They want to deal with the same person every time they pick up the phone. They want someone who understands their business, their culture and the challenges they face.

They want quality over quantity.

Smaller agencies tend to build their reputation on relationships rather than KPIs. That means candidates are submitted because they're right for the role, not because someone has a target to hit before the end of the week.

Clients also benefit from a more personal service. Regular face-to-face meetings, honest conversations and a recruiter who genuinely cares about getting the right result.

And let's be honest, recruitment fees are often more competitive too.

At 2020 Recruitment, we treat every client as though they are our only client. We take the time to understand your business, your team and exactly what you're looking for before we start the search.

If you're looking for a recruitment partner who will act as an extension of your business rather than just another supplier, we'd love to have a conversation.

Get in touch and let us come and meet you.

02/06/2026

Recruitment agencies are often seen as a last resort by employers, but in reality, they should be viewed as a strategic hiring partner from the start.

Think about what usually happens before a vacancy reaches an agency.

The role has been advertised for weeks. Internal teams have spent hours reviewing applications. Managers have taken time away from their day jobs to interview candidates. Offers may even have been made and rejected.

Only when those routes have been exhausted does the vacancy land with a recruiter.
By that point, most active job seekers have already seen and applied for the role. The challenge then becomes finding the people who weren't looking, weren't applying and weren't visible on the job boards.

That's where a good recruiter earns their fee.

We spend our time building networks, speaking to candidates daily and identifying talented people who aren't actively searching but may be open to the right opportunity. More often than not, we find the person that couldn't be found through traditional advertising.

When you add up the cost of job adverts, management time, lost productivity, interviewing, administration and delayed hires, you've often spent more than the recruitment fee before engaging an agency.

The best recruitment partnerships aren't built when things have gone wrong. They're built before you need them.

Build a relationship with a good recruiter who understands your business, your culture and your hiring needs, and recruitment becomes a lot less painful.

Speaking of good recruiters, my details are below.
