Marketing is changing, but the qualities businesses value haven’t.

The tools and channels may evolve, but the fundamentals remain the same.
There’s plenty of conversation around AI, automation and new technology, and of course, those skills matter.

When we speak to businesses about senior marketing hires, the same qualities consistently come up, someone who can think commercially, use strategic judgement, understand the customer, influence those around them and, ultimately, turn marketing activity into something that genuinely moves the business forward.

The tools will continue to change. The ability to think commercially won’t.
For us, that’s why a strong marketing CV is only part of the picture when we’re headhunting.

The more important question is:
Can this person make a difference to this particular business?
That’s often where the best hires are found.

September always feels a little like a reset.

Not necessarily a complete change. Sometimes it’s simply the point where you stop thinking about something and start doing something about it.
A new project, a promotion, a different direction or perhaps a new role or career move. Whatever the next step looks like, you don’t have to have it all figured out before you take it.

If you’re thinking about what comes next and would value some guidance or an honest conversation about the market, we’re always happy to help.
Here’s to taking the next step.

When hiring for a senior marketing role, the question isn’t always internal or external?

It’s who is best placed to take the business forward? Sometimes that person is already in the business. Sometimes they’re not.
Looking externally shouldn’t mean overlooking your internal talent. It gives you a wider view of the market, helps benchmark your existing team and ensures you’re considering the person who best fits the role, the business and its ambitions.

We explore this in our latest blog, including why 70% of senior marketing moves were external hires last year.

When someone leaves a marketing role, it’s tempting to simply replace like-for-like. Same job title. Same responsibilities. Same job description.

However, businesses rarely stand still; The team may have grown, the strategy may have changed, or new priorities may have emerged. The business may now need something very different from its marketing function.

Before starting the search, it’s worth asking: If we were creating this role from scratch today, what would we actually want this person to achieve?

Sometimes the best hire isn't a replacement for the person who left. It’s the person who can take the role and the marketing function forward.

Our MD, Matt has recently been featured in The Telegraph’s recent piece on the world of high-end recruitment.

It’s a great insight into the recruitment industry and the role specialist headhunters play in connecting businesses with exceptional talent.

For us at Talent Seeker, it’s particularly encouraging to see the specialist approach to recruitment recognised. The best searches aren’t simply about finding someone who can do the job, they’re about understanding the business, identifying the right talent and making the right connection.

Marketing careers are changing faster than ever. Research shows 81% of marketers are actively upskilling in AI, while 87% expect to learn new skills as a result of AI's impact on the profession. But technical skills alone won't future-proof your career.

The marketers who stand out are continuing to develop:
✔️ Commercial awareness
✔️ Strategic thinking
✔️ Communication and influencing skills
✔️ Customer understanding
✔️ AI literacy

Your next opportunity is unlikely to depend on one course or one qualification.
It's the combination of experience, curiosity and a willingness to keep learning that makes the biggest difference. Invest in your skills before you need your next job.

AI skills are becoming a key differentiator in marketing recruitment, but they're only part of the picture.

Recent UK research found that nearly 1 in 10 marketing job adverts now mention AI, almost double the proportion seen a year ago. At the same time, employers continue to prioritise commercial thinking, creativity and problem-solving alongside technical capability.

The strongest marketing hires don't simply know how to use AI. They know:
• When to challenge the data
• How to build a brand that people remember
• How to connect marketing activity with commercial results

As marketing evolves, successful hiring is becoming less about ticking every skill box and more about finding people who combine curiosity, strategic thinking and adaptability.

Great marketing teams aren’t built by hiring everyone the same. Growth often comes from bringing together different strengths:

- A performance specialist who understands acquisition.
- A brand leader who shapes positioning.
- A content expert who builds connection.
- A strategist who sees the bigger picture.

The right combination of skills creates marketing teams that can make a real impact.
