The CAA offers a unique approach to bringing businesses and apprentices together to help both parties succeed in their business objectives and career aspirations.
The reason Cornwall Marine Network (CMN) created the CAA was to address market failure. Nationally only 8% of SMEs have ever recruited an apprentice, meaning 92% have never employed an apprentice. SMEs face too many barriers to engaging apprentices and the cost and the risk to their business of getting it wrong is high. We created the CAA to reduce the risk and the cost of SMEs engaging with Apprenticeships by providing them with free advice about the benefits an apprentice brings (the return on investment, the ability to grow) using Skills Brokers, then improving the Apprenticeship journey by ensuring professional recruitment is undertaken to find the person the company says they want, then finally to reduce cost and risk by seeing the CAA undertake the employment and processing of payroll.
The CAA was created following a national pilot skills investment by the UK Commission for Employment and Skills in 2013. We have supported more than 5,000 SMEs with advice and to date recruited around 1,200 new apprentices, all in SMEs
