OVER 90% ..... 😮 😮

We recently conducted a survey where we received 100 responses to this question:

“Would it put you off applying for a vacancy if the salary detail is not advertised?”

The results showed that 91% OF PEOPLE WOULD NOT APPLY for a job if there is no salary advertised!!

That’s more than 9 out of every 10 people looking for a new job WOULD NOT APPLY for your vacancy if you do not advertise the salary!!!

STOP HIDING SALARY.

Be open about it.

Everyone has different motivators when looking for a new job. If the job looks a good fit, people may still consider it.

But people won’t apply if:

❌ They don’t know if it’ll be financially workable for them
❌ They think you are trying to blindside them into applying for a job
❌ They think they’ll be wasting their time
❌They think they’ll be wasting your time

If you are unsure what salary you should be offering, do some market research or speak with a recruiter who should be able to give you a good insight into current market expectations in most industries.

THE GREAT BRITISH UNMASKING

As of July 19th 2021 in England:

🔴Mask wearing will no longer be mandatory
🔴Social Distancing will be scrapped
🔴Working from home will no longer be recommended

Many will feel:

🔹Excited to get back into work
🔹Relieved that they no longer have to wear those itchy masks all day
🔹Glad to have face to face interactions with colleagues & clients again

BUT it’s important that we recognise that some will feel:

🔸Overwhelmed having to adapt again to “the old norm”
🔸Nervous about being in close contact with people again
🔸Anxious about still protecting themselves and their loved ones
🔸Reluctant to stop adhering to COVID safety protocols
🔸Uncomfortable around others who have stopped adhering to COVID safety protocols

So:

💙Be understanding
💙Be kind
💙Be empathetic
💙Be patient
💙Be supportive
💙Be respectful

Of employees/colleagues who aren’t as excited and comfortable as you to be “back to normal”.

Consider:

⚫️Phased returns to the workplace
⚫️Keeping some COVID measures in place whilst people adapt
⚫️Flexible working options
⚫️Holding individual & collective ‘Return to the workplace discussions’ with employees
⚫️How you can support those who may be struggling with mental health issues

HARRY’S FIRST 2 WEEKS:

-Arrived on his first day & waited in an empty reception area for 40 minutes before someone greeted him.

-Spent his first 48 hours in the business on the phone with IT trying to set up his email account.

-Only contact he had with his supervisor in the first 48 hours was a daily check-in to see if he’d sorted his email account yet.

-Hasn’t been included in any team meetings (which happen daily)

-Still hasn’t been introduced to any of the team (other than those he interviewed with)

-Still waiting for training on internal systems after 2 weeks

-Doesn’t know what he should be doing each day. Despite repeatedly asking for something to get on with whilst he waits for his training.

Harry hands in his resignation.

📞 Employer calls recruiter 📞 :

“Harry’s just handed in his resignation after only 2 weeks, I am not happy. We need someone in this role urgently, I told you that. What are you going to do for us now?” 😡

How someone is treated when they first start in a role, will form their view of the business and determine whether or not they stay in the role, long term.

Obvious?

So why do so many get it wrong?

WE PROUDLY SUPPORT OUR ARMED FORCES

Today is Armed Forces Day.

If you don’t already know, Armed Forces Day is a way of showing support to our Armed Forces and the work they do all around the world 365 days a year protecting our country and its interests.

They work tirelessly and selflessly:

- Promoting Peace
- Delivering Aid
- Tackling Crime
- Providing Security
- Fighting Terrorism

Plus the extraordinary support they have provided throughout the COVID-19 pandemic response in the UK.

They make sacrifices so we don’t have to and so that we can live freely, love freely and feel safe.

On this day we pay tribute to those who have served and continue to serve.

Here are just some of the qualities military personnel possess and why we believe every business should hire them when they leave the forces:

- Highly skilled
- Motivated
- Adaptable
- Integrity
- Honesty
- Great Leaders
- Able to take instruction
- Reliable
- Great team players

If not already, why not show your support to our veterans and consider them for your next vacancy?

MAKE IT OBVIOUS WHY THE EMPLOYER SHOULD HIRE YOU

Employers typically want to know the following:

❓ Can you save them time?
❓ Can you make them money?
❓ Can you lead a team to do one or more of these things?
❓ How you can do 1 or more of these 3 things?

There are likely many responsibilities you’ve had, skills and great achievements you’ve obtained within your previous roles but are they ALL relevant to the role you’re applying for?

Identify the key things the employer is looking for and tailor your cv to it.

Keeping your cv to the point and relevant to the role makes it easier for hiring managers to identify your suitability.

Let’s face it, if they’ve got 500+ cv’s to look at, an employer won’t have the time to read long paragraphs of fluff.

GREAT CANDIDATES ARE WALKING AWAY BECAUSE YOU:

-Took too long to respond to their applications

-Overcomplicated your hiring process & it’s now long, painful and boring

-Gave no feedback following the (unnecessary) 4 interviews you carried out

-Have poor communication with them throughout the hiring process

-Waited too long to make a decision

-Made them a low-ball offer when you finally did make a decision

-Tried to shut down any attempt of negotiation

THEY FELT:

-You weren’t convinced they are right for the job

-You don’t value their time

-You can’t get your act together

-You don’t value what they can bring to your business

-Unsure how they’ll be treated if they did join your team

-They should look elsewhere

THEIR NEW EMPLOYER:

-Responded quickly to their application

-Had an efficient and robust process in place

-Made them feel valued

-Told the candidate they believed in them

-Sign posted when the candidate should expect to hear from them

-Made a decision swiftly & efficiently once they’d seen the candidate

-Made a fair offer

-Was open to negotiate for the right person

-Left no doubt in the candidates mind about what they are like to work for

💯 🙌

IF YOU DON’T:

- Pay people fairly

- Treat people fairly

- Respect people for prioritising family

- Understand that people get sick

- Support people when they are vulnerable

- Encourage people to have a healthy work/life/health balance

PEOPLE WILL LEAVE❗️❗️

NO AMOUNT OF:

- Bean bags & Pool tables in breakout areas

- Dress down/Pizza Fridays

- Ice cream van Tuesdays

- Unlimited free coffee & Biscuits

MAKE UP FOR:

- Feeling undervalued

- Feeling disrespected

- Having to choose between a job and your family

- Feeling guilty for getting sick

- Feeling alone when you need support

- Having to choose between living your life or keeping your job

WHY ARE EMPLOYERS RELUCTANT TO HIRE SENIOR WORKERS?

Reluctant to and resist change❓

Uncomfortable taking instruction and criticism from junior supervisors❓

Not interested in learning new technologies and ways of working❓

Rightly or wrongly, there is a stigma attached to hiring older workers.

However, now more than ever, senior workers could be an ideal
solution to many employers who are feeling the pressure of having unfilled vacancies in their business.

We explore how and why here...

Whilst vacancies are on the rise in the UK, (in fact, vacancy levels right now are not far off pre-pandemic levels) many employers are struggling to fill their vacancies due to a skill shortage. The candidate market has somewhat stagnated as the uncertainty of COVID and continued extensions of lockd...

DO YOU WISH YOU COULD TAKE THE GUESS WORK OUT OF HIRING❓

Most employers will hire on skill and fire on behaviour.

Skill is easy to identify and usually evidenced on a cv, or in some cases, a practical assessment.

Behaviour is not so easy to identify.

Many employers go off first impressions at interview and how they THINK someone will fit into the team.

Employers ask candidates specific questions relating to their skill/experience, but rarely ask questions around behaviour specific to the individual & if they do, with no real challenge to the answers given.

Many employers have a process to understand what skill set/experience they are hiring, but don’t have a process to really understand WHO they are recruiting & how they will ultimately fit into their team.

Isn’t it strange that many employers don’t have a process to assess the behaviour?

HOW DYNAMIC IS YOUR TEAM❔

A lot has been made of Southgate’s recent 26 man squad for the European Championship.

4 RB’s in a 26 man squad.. “4 players that do the same job”….

But do they?

On paper their job title is the same but do they all do the job in the same way?

🔹Pacey & Creative
🔹Defensively Minded
🔹Leadership
🔹Dynamic & Adaptable

Different attributes and behaviours, but all equally as important & will each play a part in the overall success of the team.

Just because they share a job title, it doesn’t mean that they will add value to a team in the same way.

There will be times when you need people in your business to:

🔸Take action & Deliver quickly
🔸Take a cautious approach & ensure mistakes are limited
🔸Lead from the front & bring people together
🔸Be adaptable, pick up responsibility in areas outside of their comfort zone & be creative in their approach to get the job done

It's rare you'll find any 1 person that is able to and/or comfortable operating in all of these spaces.

❓ Do you try to hire people with different attributes and behaviours?

❓ How do you select new additions to your team & how do you assess & uncover their natural tendencies and behaviours?

ARE YOU LACKING TRANSPARENCY❔

Misleading or unclear job ads increase your chance of a bad hire considerably❌

You’ll spend a lot more time vetting unsuitable cv’s and speaking with candidates that aren’t right for the job.

If you receive 50+ applications and 45 of them aren’t suitable, you’ll soon be pulling your hair out and wondering where your day has gone😩

Make your recruitment process more efficient by keeping your job ad on point and clear ✅

Be careful with the terminology you use when writing a job ad such as “Flexible hours”.

If your ad states just “Flexible Hours” you will receive a lot of cv’s from people who want a job that flexes around their lives, when so often when this terminology is used, the employer wants the candidate to be flexible and pretty much work when they are asked to🕑

Be clear in your expectations, else you’ll waste countless hours being told no 😤

Before you start hiring, consider what would attract you to a role and implement them into your ad ✅

Make a clear list of responsibilities and a corresponding set of skills and experienced required ✅

Do you really need someone with a degree? No? Then take it out.

Unnecessary "requirements" are limiting your candidate reach❗️
