Volunteering takes many forms. Sometimes it's giving your time directly through your employer, and sometimes it's using your skills, experience, and passion to support causes that matter outside of work.
This Volunteer's Week, we're celebrating the different ways people contribute to their communities and recognising the positive impact that volunteering can have on individuals, organisations, and society as a whole.
One of those people is our colleague, Eyrun Bernhardsdottir, whose volunteering journey demonstrates how professional expertise and community spirit can come together to create meaningful change.
During the COVID lockdown in 2020, Eyrun volunteered with the Scottish Tech Army while on furlough and balancing life at home with an 18-month-old. At a time when many charities were struggling to move services online, the organisation connected skilled volunteers with third sector groups needing urgent digital support.
From improving online accessibility for charities to supporting volunteer recruitment and mentoring young people looking to build careers in tech, the experience demonstrated how powerful people’s time and expertise can be when directed towards meaningful causes.
More recently, Eyrun joined the Board of The Halliday Foundation in Glasgow, a community-led charity focused on tackling homelessness and poverty across the city’s East End. Through emergency food provision, community support, training initiatives, and long-term pathways out of poverty, the Foundation’s work is made possible by dedicated volunteers, many with lived experience themselves.
Both experiences are a reminder that volunteering creates impact in many different ways, through skills, community, leadership, and compassion.
