What a great day at yesterday's Chamber Exchange, kindly hosted by True Colours Theatre CIO Foundation and sponsored by Pitman Training.

The event was filled with conversation and people making new business connections.

We heard from:

🎤 Alisar Jane Taylor from True Colours Theatre on the positive impact the theatre has on the local community. They're currently running a See The Ability Campaign, raising funds to deliver music, movement, performing arts and wellbeing activities for the community.

🎤 Lesley Cuthbertson and Paul Lewis QFP from Pitman Training, our event sponsors, who discussed their current focus on apprenticeship training.

As an Ecosystem Partner, Pitman Training are offering Chamber members an exclusive 50% off all courses, which is a fantastic opportunity for businesses looking to invest in skills and development.

Thanks to everyone who joined us on the day.

“We all have a role to play in creating a more inclusive society, we must collectively keep pushing for change."

That was the message from Professor Helen Pankhurst CBE when she joined more than 140 business leaders at Radisson Blu Durham yesterday for our latest 1815 Lunch, sponsored by Saica Group and supported by our large business associate sponsor, Newcastle College International.

Speaking to senior leaders from across the North East, Professor Pankhurst highlighted the importance of collaboration, adaptability and more flexible ways of working in driving inclusive growth. She reminded us that businesses which take thoughtful approaches to flexibility are not only better reflecting the realities of people’s lives, but are also creating the conditions for stronger, more sustainable performance.

That message was echoed by our sponsors, who spoke about the importance of people, partnerships and future talent in helping businesses thrive across the region.

Riccardo Tonelli, Regional Director at Saica Group, said: “Connections are key to taking businesses from surviving to thriving and this is the perfect platform. The Chamber brings people together.”

Catherine Orridge, Assistant Principal at Newcastle College International, said: "We need to bridge the gap between education and employment through meaningful work experience opportunities that equip young people with essential skills. That’s why events such as today are so important.”

Together, their reflections reinforced the central theme of the day: that inclusive growth depends on collaboration across business, education and the wider North East community.

It was a privilege to hear from someone with such a powerful story and such a clear commitment to progress. From her reflections on leadership, representation and the continued need for gender equality, Professor Pankhurst gave us plenty to think about as we continue to support inclusive economic growth across our region.

Our thanks go to Professor Helen Pankhurst CBE, Dr Suzanne Hague for leading the fireside chat, Saica Group for sponsoring the event, Newcastle College for their support as large business associate sponsor, and Radisson Blu Durham for hosting us.

What a brilliant second bitesize session for our Future Leaders Programme today!

We were delighted to welcome Sam Rennison, retired Chief Superintendent at Northumbria Police, whose 30-year career brought a powerful mix of leadership, resilience and real-world insight to a packed room.

Sam shared grounded insights into peer mentoring, strategic networking and public speaking, drawing on decades of leadership experience.

Key takeaways included:

🗣️ “The hardest conversations are actually the kindest conversations you can have.” She encouraged future leaders to see tough performance conversations as positive opportunities. Raising issues early shows care for colleagues and peers.

👥 Find mentors who challenge you: “Find someone not similar to you, someone who doesn’t think like you. You’ll learn much quicker and grow with that challenge. Look for gaps in your skill set and reach out to someone who can provide that knowledge. Just send that message. What have you got to lose?”

🤝 Build connection through common ground: find what you share with people you need to influence, so they understand you and are more open to what you have to say.

💪 Prepare for pushback: people won’t always agree with you, but that’s part of growth and leadership.

Following our guest speaker, we moved into a highly interactive workshop led by Kerry Leng, exploring how successful leaders build networks of trust, insight and challenge, and how supporting others strengthens your own credibility. As Kerry put it: “Shift your focus from ‘how do I solve this’ to ‘who can help me solve this differently’.”

The session wrapped up with a hands-on Chamber policy plan challenge, where attendees created strategic networking maps to tackle real North East business challenges, putting their learning into practice.

Delivered in partnership with Gateshead College, the Future Leaders Programme responds directly to what employers need: stronger communication, confidence and professional presence among early career professionals.

Another brilliant step forward. Thank you to everyone who joined us. We hope to see you at the next session. Also,a big shoutout to the catering students at Gateshead College for the fantastic spread!

If you would like to get involved in upcoming sessions, take a look at the programme: https://lnkd.in/e4agRchZ or reach out to Dr Jessie Kelly-Baxter for more information.
