One of the biggest challenges we hear from employers across the Logistics & Supply Chain sector isn’t a lack of applicants… it’s a lack of genuinely strong people.

The reality is, great supply chain professionals are rare and there are a few key reasons why:

1️⃣ The best people are usually not actively job hunting.

Top performers are typically well looked after, heavily relied upon and deeply embedded within their business. They’re solving problems daily, leading teams and keeping operations moving, not scrolling job boards at 10pm.

2️⃣ Supply chain experience is built through exposure, not theory.

You can’t fast-track years of dealing with delayed containers, stock shortages, transport failures, customer pressure and operational firefighting. The strongest professionals have usually developed through experience across multiple challenges, systems and environments.

3️⃣ Great supply chain people combine technical ability with people skills.

Plenty of people can understand planning systems, inventory or transport operations.

Far fewer can:

✔️ Communicate under pressure
✔️ Lead teams effectively
✔️ Influence stakeholders
✔️ Manage customers
✔️ Solve problems commercially

That combination is what makes truly high-performing individuals stand out.

It’s also why recruitment within supply chain has become increasingly relationship-driven rather than purely advert-driven.

The strongest hires often come through networks, referrals and conversations long before they ever hit the open market.

What do you think makes exceptional supply chain professionals stand out from the crowd?

Last weekend, I picked up a set of spanners and headed to a local rent-a-ramp facility to replace the front shocks on our Ford Ranger.

For a relatively small hourly fee, they provide:

🔧 Specialist equipment
🔧 A safe working environment to DIY
🔧 Technical knowledge when needed

Yes, there's a link to recruitment coming...

Just like I attempted, a lot of businesses try to do everything internally:

🟩 Recruitment
🟩 Advertising
🟩 Screening
🟩 Interviewing
🟩 Market mapping
🟩 Salary benchmarking

But just because you can do it yourself, doesn’t always mean it’s the most efficient use of time, money or expertise...

A few curse words, a bucket of sweat and 3 hours later- a new pair of front shocks were swapped in. However I can assure you from the moment I took the first bolt out, I was already regretting not letting a Mechanic solve this problem for me!

Good recruitment partnerships work in a similar way.

You’re not just paying for “someone to post a job advert.” You’re gaining access to infrastructure, networks, process and experience that would take years (and a lot of money) to build internally.

Frustrated with ongoing Supply Chain hiring challenges?

Sometimes it makes more sense to bring in the people who already have the tools, network and expertise to solve the problem efficiently.

That’s exactly why GRN Search Group exists.

I came across this CV whilst headhunting this week and it perfectly sums up one of the biggest problems in recruitment right now…

People are still downloading generic CV templates packed with placeholder text, AI-generated waffle and zero personality!

Your CV does not need to sound corporate to be effective.

It just needs to clearly explain:

✅ What you actually do
✅ What you’ve achieved
✅ What environment you’ve worked in
✅ Why somebody should interview you

A badly written CV doesn’t always mean a bad candidate… but it absolutely creates the wrong first impression.

Please, before sending your CV:

🟩 Read it back properly
🟩 Remove template placeholders
🟩 Check dates/job titles

Ask yourself: “Would I hire me based on this?”

Recruiters and hiring managers notice these things immediately...

Progression within Transport & Logistics isn’t always easy to find…

At the moment, we're working on a number of genuine career progression opportunities across Northern Ireland for professionals within the transport and logistics sector.

We're particularly keen to speak with:

➡️ Transport Planners looking to step into Senior Planner positions
➡️ Senior Planners ready to progress into Operations Management
➡️ Operations Managers / General Managers interested in exploring Senior Leadership Team opportunities

Many of these positions are with growing businesses going through significant operational growth, investment, restructuring/acquisitions or succession planning meaning the opportunities for progression are very real.

Whether you’re actively looking or simply open to a confidential conversation about what the market currently looks like, I’d be happy to speak.

The transport industry across NI continues to evolve rapidly, and experienced operational people are becoming increasingly difficult to find.

📩 Feel free to send your CV directly for a confidential discussion to [email protected] or give us a call on 028 87755 998.

One word to describe the Senior Management & C-Suite talent pool in Northern Ireland at the moment?

Curious.

Over the last 6 months, we’ve seen a noticeable increase in senior professionals quietly exploring the market.

Not necessarily applying for jobs, but open to conversations.

Why?

🟢 Business restructures
🟢 Limited progression opportunities
🟢 Increased workloads without increased support
🟢 Desire for greater influence and autonomy
🟢 Market uncertainty creating long-term questions

Many aren’t actively “looking” but they are curious about what else is out there.

The interesting part?

A large percentage of these individuals are highly experienced operators with proven track records who traditionally would have stayed put for years.

For businesses planning growth in 2026, this creates a unique opportunity to engage talent that may not have been accessible 12-18 months ago.

One of the biggest reasons a new hire fails… isn’t capability.

It’s unclear expectations.

A successful onboarding process starts long before someone sits at their desk on day one. The businesses that retain and develop strong people are typically the ones that set clear expectations from the very beginning.

✅ What does success look like in the first 30, 60 and 90 days?
✅ What standards are expected?
✅ How will performance be measured?
✅ What does “good” actually look like within the business culture?

Too often, companies assume new starters will simply “figure it out” as they go.

The reality is that clarity creates confidence, confidence creates consistency and consistency creates long-term hires!

A strong onboarding process isn’t just about paperwork and inductions, it’s about giving someone the best possible platform to succeed.

Are you looking for a seat at the table?

We are currently undertaking a strategic market mapping exercise across Northern Ireland for a senior logistics leader opportunity.

This is a key appointment for a growing haulage operation, with responsibility spanning:

✔ Full P&L ownership
✔ Operational leadership
✔ Team oversight & performance
✔ Driving efficiency and growth initiatives

The business is entering a significant growth phase, making this a genuinely high-impact role where the right individual will have the autonomy and backing to shape the operation moving forward and be rewarded accordingly.

I’m keen to speak confidentially with experienced transport leaders who have a proven track record of running complex operations commercially and operationally.

Importantly, this is not a role for someone looking to make the jump into logistics leadership without prior sector experience. The business requires someone who has already operated within a transport or haulage environment and understands the realities of running an “own fleet” model from operational pressures and compliance through to driver management, fleet utilisation and commercial performance.

If you feel now could be the right time for a conversation, feel free to reach out directly.
