One of the biggest challenges we hear from employers across the Logistics & Supply Chain sector isn’t a lack of applicants… it’s a lack of genuinely strong people.
The reality is, great supply chain professionals are rare and there are a few key reasons why:
1️⃣ The best people are usually not actively job hunting.
Top performers are typically well looked after, heavily relied upon and deeply embedded within their business. They’re solving problems daily, leading teams and keeping operations moving, not scrolling job boards at 10pm.
2️⃣ Supply chain experience is built through exposure, not theory.
You can’t fast-track years of dealing with delayed containers, stock shortages, transport failures, customer pressure and operational firefighting. The strongest professionals have usually developed through experience across multiple challenges, systems and environments.
3️⃣ Great supply chain people combine technical ability with people skills.
Plenty of people can understand planning systems, inventory or transport operations.
Far fewer can:
✔️ Communicate under pressure
✔️ Lead teams effectively
✔️ Influence stakeholders
✔️ Manage customers
✔️ Solve problems commercially
That combination is what makes truly high-performing individuals stand out.
It’s also why recruitment within supply chain has become increasingly relationship-driven rather than purely advert-driven.
The strongest hires often come through networks, referrals and conversations long before they ever hit the open market.
What do you think makes exceptional supply chain professionals stand out from the crowd?
