The Quality improvement framework for the early learning and childcare sectors is now live on the Education Scotland website. The Care Inspectorate and Education Scotland have worked together to minimise the burden on settings by reducing the number of quality indicators (QIs) from 28 in the current frameworks to 11 in the new framework. It is important to note we will begin to use the new framework for inspection from September 2025.

The Food Standards Agency has published advice for the safe use of flour, where flour is uncooked (raw) there is a risk of food poisoning, this includes when used in crafts such as playdough.

You can treat flour by heating it to make it safe, for information and instructions on how to heat treat please see the link below.

We worked with Childsmile on a new practice note, Supporting healthy smiles: Childsmile practice note for early learning and childcare.

We worked in collaboration with colleagues at Childsmile to help celebrate the excellent work in improving children’s dental health and oral hygiene across the country. The resource is designed to act as a tool to prompt reflection and develop approaches to toothbrushing and supporting good oral hygiene throughout life.

Your assessor may ask you to demonstrate knowledge on how to raise concerns in the workplace.

It may be useful for learners to familiarise themselves with guidance published by the Care Inspectorate and SSSC, this guidance gives detailed advise on actions that should be taken, including your right to raise concerns in confidence.

Are you a social service employer?

It’s your responsibility to have procedures in place to make sure your staff can speak up if they have a concern and know it will be treated sensitively and in confidence.

Our Raising concerns in the workplace guidance, published jointly with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC), has clear guidance for employers to support you with this.
