The driver shortage conversation has changed, but it has not disappeared.

Transport Operator’s recent coverage of Logistics UK’s Employment and Skills Report highlights an important point for the road transport sector: 61.6% of HGV drivers are now aged 45 or over.

That does not mean every operator is facing the same pressure they felt in 2021. But it does show why driver recruitment cannot only be treated as a short-term cover issue.

The sector still needs experienced, reliable drivers. It also needs a stronger pipeline of people coming into the industry, building confidence on the road, gaining the right licences, and seeing HGV driving as a long-term career.
For employers, that means thinking beyond the next vacancy.

Pay, shift patterns, onboarding, training routes, vehicle standards, communication, and day-to-day treatment all influence whether drivers stay, move, or leave the sector entirely.

For candidates, it is also a reminder that driving can offer more than a stopgap job. With the right employer, it can provide stability and progression in an industry the UK depends on every day.

The challenge now is keeping good drivers in the sector and making the next generation want to join it.
