Regions leading on CHP capacity in 2025

If you’re recruiting for CHP specialists, targeting regions with the largest schemes gives you an edge.

Yorkshire & Humberside leads the UK with the highest average CHP capacity per site - 10.8 MW.

That’s almost triple the South East’s 3.6 MW, and ten times the South West’s 1.0 MW.

Large-scale capacity means higher technical complexity, more skilled operational teams, and greater demand for experienced leaders.

If your next hire needs to handle big, complex CHP systems, Yorkshire & Humberside is the place to look.

Let’s talk about aligning your search with the UK’s true high-capacity regions: Click the link https://calendly.com/renewconsultancy/discovery-call-zoom-30-minutes to book a call.

After more than twenty years in recruitment, with the long nights, the pressure, and the moments where I questioned if the graft was worth it, something unexpected happened.

At this year’s Global Recruiter Awards, I was named Best Permanent Consultant, sponsored by Devyce. We were also shortlisted for Best Client Service, sponsored by Professional Passport.

Even now, it hasn’t quite sunk in.

This is not a solo win. It belongs to the people who made it possible.

Ariana, you keep Renew moving. You’re calm in the centre of the storm and the reason the structure holds, no matter what’s happening.

Vee, Samara, Ayushi - your focus, your energy, and your care for how we work and who we work with never goes unnoticed.

To Claire, Sara, Jordan, Louise and the wider Retrained Search crew -thank you for your honesty, your insight, and your belief in what we’re building. You’ve shaped every part of this.

We also want to thank The Global Recruiter Awards team, especially Gary and John and The Recruitment Network, run by Graham and James, for organising an evening that truly celebrates quality in this industry.

Thank you to the REC for setting the standard and helping create the framework that recognises work like this.

A quiet thank you as well to Ashley Benfield and Alan Blair from P&I Generators, who joined us on the night. It was a pleasure to spend the evening with you.

Congratulations to all the finalists and the winner in the Best Client Service category:
Winner: Kite Consulting
Highly Commended: Talent Locker and Revoco

And to the other finalists in the Best Permanent Consultant category - Connor Spicer, Daniel Thompson, Hannah Clarke, and Jonathan Benjamin, thank you for raising the bar.

This award might have my name on it, but it only exists because of the team behind the scenes.

Everything that happens on the front line is backed by operations, marketing, admin, and resourcing done to the highest standard. That’s what makes this level of service possible.

We’re proud to be recognised for our work in this industry over the last two decades. And we’re focused on what comes next.

The recent AWS outage reached further than many expected.

Several power generation and energy storage platforms were affected, exposing how dependent our industry has become on the cloud.

It’s prompted leadership teams to ask a new question, where does resilience really sit in a connected energy world?

Here’s what we’re seeing across the sector.

Video script

When AWS experienced a major outage recently, it caused more than a few technical issues.

Across the power generation sector, many operators who rely on cloud-based monitoring, control, and analytics systems saw immediate disruption.

Telemetry data stopped updating in real time, alarms were delayed, and remote control functions failed.

For businesses managing BESS, CHP, or distributed energy assets, that kind of interruption creates genuine operational risk.

The incident raised an important question for leadership teams. How resilient are our systems, and more importantly, do we have the right people overseeing them?

As digitalisation accelerates, the focus is shifting from infrastructure to capability.

Companies are investing in people who understand both operational technology and cloud systems, who can manage data integrity, reliability, and risk.

We’re seeing a rise in roles such as Head of OT Integration, Site Reliability Engineer, and Digital Operations Manager, positions that bridge the gap between engineering and technology.

This is where resilience starts. Not just in the cloud, but in leadership that understands how to keep connected power systems running safely, no matter what happens upstream.

Some leaders come through OEM routes, bringing process discipline and deep technical governance.

Others grow from site-based careers, developing adaptability, commercial instinct, and client-first leadership.

Both pathways create strong leaders, but in different ways.

Which background do you think creates the biggest long-term impact?

If you're in power generation and you're planning ahead for 2026, you're probably asking the same questions we are.

Where's demand shifting? What's holding projects back? And how are other businesses managing growth, delivery and retention, with everything from diesel and gas to battery storage and hybrid systems on the table?

So instead of guessing, we went straight to the source.

We spoke directly with over a dozen senior leaders, CEOs, MDs, HR and Ops Directors across the UK power sector.

What they told us was clear.

Projects are being delayed by grid connections and supply chain strain. Investment is shifting fast into decentralised energy, storage, and even hydrogen. And everyone’s facing the same challenge, finding and keeping skilled people.

We pulled all of this together into one report.

And for a short time, we’re giving away the Industry Insights section for free.

If you're planning for 2026, and you want a grounded view of what's actually changing, not guesswork, just comment yes and I’ll send you the link.

Let’s talk about one of the most misunderstood roles in powergen recruitment: the Service Manager.

This isn’t just a middle-management function. A strong Service Manager protects uptime, controls costs, manages engineers, and keeps customers retained.

So what should you budget to recruit one?

In today’s UK market, we’re typically seeing:

£50k-£60k for regional managers overseeing smaller mobile teams

£60k-£75k for multi-region leaders with compliance, H&S, and cost control exposure

£80k+ where P&L ownership and client accountability are included, particularly in CHP, gas engines, and decentralised energy

And in high-pressure environments, candidates expect bonus schemes tied to uptime and retention, not just annual reviews.

But these are guidelines only. The right package depends on:

Location

Size of business

Number of engineers managed

Complexity of projects

Sector focus (CHP, diesel, BESS, decentralised energy)

If you’re under market, you’ll struggle to attract talent and risk bleeding value from the team you’re trying to lead.

If you want precise benchmarking for your role, so you don’t underpay or overpay, we can run a tailored compensation study and give you the data to make the right call.

Let’s compare two roles often seen as interchangeable: Technical Sales Engineers vs Applications Engineers.

On the surface, both support commercial delivery.
But the value they drive is very different.

Technical Sales Engineers

Own the customer journey

Build trust with contractors and consultants

Manage pre-qual, spec conversion, and margin strategy

They close deals and defend value in the field

Applications Engineers

Translate specs into workable designs

Ensure system compatibility

De-risk delivery before site work begins

They stop bad installs before they start

So who drives more value?

Truth is, they’re both critical.
But the mistake is assuming one can do the job of the other.
Sales Engineers need client-facing fluency.
Applications Engineers need system and integration logic.

If you're missing either, you're burning time, trust, and money.

Why is it so hard to hire senior commercial talent in the power generation sector?

Many power hire businesses struggle to recruit the right Key Account Managers or commercial leaders, especially in high-value regions like London and the South East.

Here’s why it’s a recurring challenge:

Technical and commercial is a rare blend
Most candidates either lean too heavily on sales or too heavily on operations. Very few combine technical credibility with strategic account management.

Generalist recruiters miss the nuance
Businesses often receive CVs from “talkers not doers”, candidates who don’t understand rental contracts, project delivery, or client pressures in critical infrastructure.

Internal teams are already stretched
Senior leaders are often juggling delivery, strategy, and sales, which leaves little capacity to run a structured hiring process, or access hidden talent in the market.

We ran an executive search for a client in this exact position. By mapping 147 professionals and engaging those with the right blend of experience, we delivered a hire who now owns commercial operations in a region worth millions.

That hire is already delivering. So is the business.

These aren’t just hiring problems, they’re growth problems. Solving them is what we do.
