Well, I didn’t expect this…

I’ve been named a finalist for Outstanding Mentor at the Chichester & Bognor Regis Business Awards 2026.

The Ultimate Guide to responding to a job:

When you are in the market looking for a new role, its important to be as attentive to what you want as it is to us recruiters to find the right person, so here are a few points to bear in mind when responding to an advert:

1. Ensure you have the right skills for the job itself, if the advert states that you must have specific experience / skills in a specific industry and you don’t have it, realistically you won't be considered.
2. Don’t apply for a role in a completely different location unless you are definitely intending to relocate there soon!
3. Ensure your CV showcases your skills and experience and that they match the requirements of the role as closely as possible
4. Here’s a big one! Ensure all your contact details and location are on the CV, you’d be surprised how often we are keen to speak to a potential Candidate and can’t find a telephone number!
5. Ensure your CV is ideally no longer than 2 pages, 3 at most
6. Ideally put a link on your CV to your LinkedIn profile, recruiters and clients will ideally want to look at this, if you don’t have a LinkedIn profile its worth getting one, it presents a more professional profile.
7. If you are keen on the role, and definitely feel you are a strong fit for the position and have applied for a role, follow it up with a phone call

If you are being rejected for a role that you feel you are right for, hopefully this guide may help you to figure out if there’s a specific a reason, recruiters are here to help but we also have limited time and resource, personally I try and respond to each and every ad response but at times thats no always possible for a variety of reasons, roles are temporarily put on hold, job specifications change, we may be asking further questions from the client regarding certain criteria, we are here to help, and I’m always happy to talk to Candidates if and when I have time, I hope this proves useful

I’ve always been a people person.

But I didn’t realise how much that would shape my career until years ago.

During my time in the military police, a commanding officer once described me as having an infectious sense of humour.

At the time, I just took it as a compliment.

Looking back now, it was more than that. That ability to connect, build rapport, and put people at ease has been the foundation of everything I’ve done since.

Especially in recruitment. Skills can be taught. Experience can be gained.
But personality is your edge. It is what people remember.

What are you changing up or doing differently in your business at the moment?

Something I’ve noticed recently is a shift in working hours.

With business increasing at a rate of knots, especially with the introduction of Solid Recruitment and the collaboration with Mike Pike, I’ve realised the more rigid hours I used to keep have become a lot more fluid.

It’s not really about 9 to 5 anymore.

It’s more about doing what needs to be done to get the job done properly. That said, it’s also important not to let it creep into working all hours and burning out.

Finding that balance is the challenge, but it’s an important one.

In business we are always trying to find the best way to work, serve our clients and keep improving how we do things.

So I’m curious.

In business, growth isn’t always about spending huge amounts of money or taking massive risks.

More often than not, it comes down to two things: courage and consistency.

The courage to make decisions that feel right for you… and the consistency to keep showing up and doing the work over time.

One decision I made a long time ago was to be a solopreneur in recruitment, rather than trying to build a huge business or a big team.

For me, it’s always been about building strong relationships, doing great work for clients and candidates, and growing at a pace that feels right.

Although we are a team, Mike and I work in very separate markets so more of ‘solopreneur team’ if such thing exists??

There’s no single “correct” way to build a business, it’s about being intentional with the path you choose.

So I’m curious…

What’s your superpower at work?

The one skill that just makes everything that little bit easier.

For me, it’s listening.

As a recruitment consultant, it’s probably the most important skill I’ve developed over the years. Really listening to what candidates want from their careers, and properly understanding what my clients need in their teams.

It’s not just hearing words, it’s digesting information, understanding motivations, and reading between the lines so I can give the best service possible.

When you get that right, you don’t just fill roles… you create the right matches.
That’s what makes recruitment work.
