There's no shortage of advice when you run a business: mentors, coaches, friends, family, all with an opinion.

But who do you actually listen to?

Is there a piece of advice you didn't take, and you're glad you didn't?

For me, when I first started in recruitment, plenty of people told me I should build a big company with a large team. I never have, and I don't plan to.

I love the freedom of staying solo. It's one of the things that makes Chichester Recruitment what it is: bespoke, personal, and built around the clients and candidates I work with, not a target list.

If that one-to-one service is what you're after, you know where to come.

It still puts a smile on my face. I won Outstanding Mentor at this year's Chichester & Bognor Regis Business Awards, hosted by Chichester Chamber of Commerce.

One part of my work I love most is giving back, running interview skills sessions in local schools, colleges and at the University of Chichester.

With today being World Youth Skills Day, it felt like the right moment to share it.

What a brilliant day I had alongside Ian Moore, celebrating what young people bring to the world of work.

Is there something you do to give back to your local community, or a charity close to your heart?

I don’t post about this enough… but I probably should.

I have now had over 70 five-star reviews on google!

And every single one matters to me, not because of the number… but because of what sits behind them:

👉 Someone trusted me👉 Someone needed find a solution to their problem👉 And it worked

In recruitment, you’re dealing with people’s:
* Careers
* Businesses
* And livelihoods

That’s not something I take lightly.
So if you’ve worked with me, referred someone, or left a review…
Thank you ❤️ It doesn’t go unnoticed.

Well, I didn’t expect this…

I’ve been named a finalist for Outstanding Mentor at the Chichester & Bognor Regis Business Awards 2026.

Over 180 entries this year, so to be on that list is an absolute privilege!

The mentoring side of what I do has never been about awards or recognition. It’s the honest conversations I love.

👉 When someone’s stuck👉 When confidence has taken a hit👉 When they just need a bit of clarity

That’s the bit I enjoy.

So I shall dust off the suit, and see you all on the 12th June at The Avisford Hotel.
And congratulations to everyone else who made it through, some amazing businesses and people nominated!

The Ultimate Guide to responding to a job:

When you are in the market looking for a new role, its important to be as attentive to what you want as it is to us recruiters to find the right person, so here are a few points to bear in mind when responding to an advert:

1. Ensure you have the right skills for the job itself, if the advert states that you must have specific experience / skills in a specific industry and you don’t have it, realistically you won't be considered.
2. Don’t apply for a role in a completely different location unless you are definitely intending to relocate there soon!
3. Ensure your CV showcases your skills and experience and that they match the requirements of the role as closely as possible
4. Here’s a big one! Ensure all your contact details and location are on the CV, you’d be surprised how often we are keen to speak to a potential Candidate and can’t find a telephone number!
5. Ensure your CV is ideally no longer than 2 pages, 3 at most
6. Ideally put a link on your CV to your LinkedIn profile, recruiters and clients will ideally want to look at this, if you don’t have a LinkedIn profile its worth getting one, it presents a more professional profile.
7. If you are keen on the role, and definitely feel you are a strong fit for the position and have applied for a role, follow it up with a phone call

If you are being rejected for a role that you feel you are right for, hopefully this guide may help you to figure out if there’s a specific a reason, recruiters are here to help but we also have limited time and resource, personally I try and respond to each and every ad response but at times thats no always possible for a variety of reasons, roles are temporarily put on hold, job specifications change, we may be asking further questions from the client regarding certain criteria, we are here to help, and I’m always happy to talk to Candidates if and when I have time, I hope this proves useful

Recruitment isn’t about CVs.

It is about solving problems that genuinely matter.

Recently, we worked with a client relocating their business.

Big move. Big pressure. Big unknowns.

They needed a Senior Estimator. Not just anyone, but the right person.

Someone who could step in and make an immediate difference.

We found that person!

The result?
✔ A smoother transition
✔ A relieved client
✔ A role filled with confidence, not compromise

That’s the part of recruitment I love most. Being the solution when things feel uncertain.

It is easy to focus on numbers. But behind every placement is a story like this.

So if you have a recruitment challenge in your business, let me see if I can help!

When was the last time someone helped solve a real problem for you?

I’ve always been a people person.

But I didn’t realise how much that would shape my career until years ago.

During my time in the military police, a commanding officer once described me as having an infectious sense of humour.

At the time, I just took it as a compliment.

Looking back now, it was more than that. That ability to connect, build rapport, and put people at ease has been the foundation of everything I’ve done since.

Especially in recruitment. Skills can be taught. Experience can be gained.
But personality is your edge. It is what people remember.

So here is the question.

What part of your personality has shaped your career the most?
