Furlough FAQs for employees

What is Furlough?
Furlough is a type of leave that has been created to protect employees from being laid off.

How does it work?
Your employer will propose to put you on Furlough leave and you must agree to the proposal and sign the agreement. You will receive 80% of your salary capped at £2500. Whilst on Furlough you cannot do any work that will profit your employer.

Who can be furloughed?
Anyone who was employed on 19th March 2020.

What benefits are included in the furlough salary?
Furlough salary must be calculated to include compulsory overtime payments, fees and contractual commission payments.

Will I lose any employment right when on furlough?
No, all rights are reserved during a period of furlough, e.g. you continue to accrue holidays.

Can I work for another employer if I am on furlough?
Yes, the regulation does not prevent an employee on furlough from working for another employer. Bear in mind your employer can ask you to start work at any time. The new job will be your second job.

Can I take my holidays if I am on furlough?
Yes, you can take holidays, you will have to request the holidays through your normal procedure, and it must be approved. Holidays must be paid at 100% of your regular income.

How long does furlough last?
Furlough leave should last for at least 3 weeks. Your employer can ask you to work after 3 weeks and put you on furlough again at another time.

Can I request to be furloughed?
Yes, people who are shielding due to public health advice because they are vulnerable or have caring responsibilities can ask to be furloughed.
