Far more than the salary — CIPD data puts a failed junior hire at £8k–£12k minimum, and REC puts a bad management hire at around £132k once everything’s counted.

Time-to-hire in finance and accounting has stretched out this year — employers more selective, candidates more cautious (ACCA, Jan 2026).

The mistake I see most: slowing the process down even further. It reads as disorganisation, not diligence.
