One of the most expensive hiring mistakes in data centre projects happens when it's already too late to fix it.

Construction is visible; cranes, contractors, activity. But the operating team is smaller, permanent, and needs something the build crew doesn't: deep knowledge of that specific facility.

New hires need site procedures, systems training, authorised-person pathways, vendor relationships and familiarity with the escalation chain. That takes time.

Recruiting a critical-facilities team a few weeks before handover leaves no room for a difficult search, notice periods, or a candidate who needs a carefully supervised transition.

The sensible question isn't "when does the rota need covering?" It's "when does this person need to start learning the asset?"

For critical facilities leadership and authorised electrical roles especially, lead times can be long.

Employers who plan backwards from the operational start date are the ones who arrive at handover with the right people in place.

An insightful two days at Solar & Storage Live!

This week, our Principal Consultant Ben took a trip up to Birmingham to attend the UK’s largest solar energy exhibition, Solar & Storage live.

As well as connecting people working at a range of innovative businesses, he also sat in on some talks where the common themes were skills gaps and recruitment challenges. This is something many of our clients discuss when they first come on board.

At Winberry, we’re supporting the industry by building permanent talent pools to service the huge demand in solar and renewables happening across the UK. This was a fantastic opportunity to introduce our permanent solutions to businesses looking for specialist sector support.

The highlight of the long drive home was a stop off at Gloucester services (if you know, you know!)

All round, a great couple of days.
