Shame when clubs don’t support the grass roots!

This week I resigned my membership at a golf club. My wife resigned at the same time.

No drama. No fallout. Just a quiet realisation that the club and I had opposing views on beginner golf, and that's fine.

I got involved with an active ladies beginner group at the club, from week two of their initial six week programme. Genuinely enthusiastic women, improving every week, turning up consistently. A second group was already signed up to follow them.

The club's decision was to close the programme after the current pipeline. No more ladies. No juniors. No wider rollout. Convert a handful to full members and call it done.

I understand the commercial logic. I just don't share it. Beginner golf isn't a recruitment funnel. It's a pipeline for the whole game.

Golf clubs have a responsibility to give back to the sport that sustains them. The ones that will be future success stories are those making genuine, ongoing investment in bringing new people into the game. Not the ones fighting their overdrafts for survival.

I've seen parents and grandparents out on the course with their kids and grandkids, and they are genuinely the happiest golfers you'll ever see. For me that's golf in its purest form.

🚨 We need to talk about what's NOT in next month's budget...

On November 26th, Rachel Reeves will announce £30 billion in tax rises. The forecasts will be detailed, precise, and potentially obsolete before they're published.

Here's why: The Treasury is planning for a workforce that's about to fundamentally transform.

Research shows:
📊 AI adoption jumping 327% in the next 2 years
📊 30% productivity gains expected
📊 1 in 4 workers being redeployed to new roles

Yet the OBR's forecasts? Based on traditional employment models.

We're legislating protections for yesterday's jobs while tomorrow's workplace is already taking shape. The Employment Rights Bill adds billions in costs just as companies contemplate AI investments that could transform their entire workforce.

It's like planning a budget for horse-drawn carriages in 1905.

The biggest fiscal risk facing the UK might not be in the spreadsheet at all—it's the revolution nobody's accounting for.

The care sector is facing a crisis that we can no longer ignore.

Sarah earned £12.50/hour caring for elderly residents with dementia. The supermarket down the road offered £13.85 to stack shelves. She had to choose.

Jamie earned £13.20/hour in a children's home, building trust with traumatized young people—only to watch colleagues leave repeatedly, re-traumatizing the very children they were meant to help.

This isn't just about individual choices. It's about a system that's broken:

→ 28-30% annual staff turnover
→ Managers doing HR without time, training, or tools
→ £3-6k cost to replace each worker who leaves
→ Better pay would actually SAVE money through retention

Meanwhile, demand is surging. By 2040, we'll need 480,000 more care workers. Who will do this work when we pay poverty wages for one of society's hardest jobs?

We're failing our most vulnerable: elderly people who built this country, and traumatized children who deserve a future.

The math is simple. The solution is clear. The question is: do we have the will to act?
