Some health conditions and support needs are not immediately visible. This week’s awareness events encourage us to look beyond appearances, listen to people’s experiences and recognise the importance of care that supports independence.
Invisible Disabilities Week | 18–24 October
A person’s appearance does not tell us everything about their health or the challenges they face. Invisible Disabilities Week highlights the experiences of people whose disabilities may not be apparent to others.
For healthcare professionals, this means listening without making assumptions. Asking about communication preferences, understanding individual support needs and respecting someone’s privacy can help them feel heard and included. The same consideration matters when supporting colleagues whose needs may also be less visible.
World Osteoporosis Day | 20 October
World Osteoporosis Day raises awareness of bone health and the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis.
For care teams, it is an opportunity to reflect on how we support people’s confidence and independence while following their individual care plans. Understanding their mobility needs, recognising concerns and communicating with the wider team helps keep support consistent across shifts.
Putting awareness into practice
Both events remind us that understanding starts with a conversation. Asking what support someone needs, taking their experiences seriously and respecting their choices can help make care more inclusive and responsive.
