What’s the most valuable skill a CFO can develop today?

According to Anders Liu-Lindberg in our latest podcast episode, the answer might be anything outside of finance.

The CFO remit has expanded dramatically. Finance leaders are increasingly expected to weigh in across technology, legal, operations, strategy and the wider business.

As Anders puts it, today a CFO needs to be “a business person first and a finance person second.”

Anders knows this space better than most. He spent 13 years in finance roles at Maersk and is now Co-founder and Partner at the Business Partnering Institute, advising finance and FP&A leaders on how to build more impactful finance organisations. He’s also built an audience of more than 400,000 finance professionals on LinkedIn.

We’re still buzzing from Monday’s exit-readiness event.

“What can finance do to drive up enterprise value?”

It was the most common question asked by the 50 CFOs and FDs who joined us at Lloyds Banking Group in the City for Cashing Out – our fireside chat with Alexis Sikorsky on selling a business to private equity.

Our founder, Leo Hewett, put the audience’s questions to Alexis, but it quickly became an open conversation, with CFOs joining in throughout – exactly what we’d hoped for.

Alexis brought a valuable perspective. He’s sat on the opposite side of the table to the CFO, sold his own business for a nine-figure sum and now advises founders and investors.

His answer to that central question began with adjusted EBITDA.

A founder may have £10 million of EBITDA and expect to sell for £100 million. But if the buyer has already adjusted that figure to £12 million and is prepared to pay £120 million, whoever hasn’t done the maths is leaving money on the table.

Alexis also challenged the room:

“You need to advertise yourselves better. Most founders, at least at the beginning, hear CFO and think accountant.”

It took a founder to tell a room full of CFOs that they undersell themselves – and he may have a point.

Getting a private equity offer is the exciting bit. For the CFO, that’s when a very different part of the deal begins.

Alexis built New Access from a basement start-up, sold a majority stake to private equity and later exited the business completely for a nine-figure sum. He’s experienced the process from the other side of the table.

Finance can’t sit on the sidelines when it comes to purpose.

That was one of the big takeaways from our recent Conscious Finance podcast conversation with Paul King - finance & fundraising expert for mission-driven founders.

He made a brilliant point.

Often, finance can feel like it’s sitting on the opposite side of the table from marketing, HR, or people teams.

Those teams might be pushing for investment in things like wellbeing, employee engagement, retention, customer experience, or brand. All of which make sense instinctively, but don’t always show up neatly on a P&L straight away.

And that’s where finance professionals have such an important role to play. Not to block those conversations, but to help translate them.

Because the things we often call “intangible” are rarely disconnected from commercial performance. Wellbeing, connection to purpose, employee engagement and brand equity all influence the measures businesses are already tracking: productivity, retention, hiring costs, customer loyalty, performance and profitability.

The opportunity for finance is to build the bridge between the two. To connect the dots between people-led or purpose-led initiatives and the numbers that matter to the business.
