What did 2025 really teach us about the UK engineering hiring market and what does that mean for 2026?

Over the past year, we’ve seen a clear shift across UK manufacturing and engineering:

⚑️ Hiring became more selective, focused on impact not headcount
⚑️ Automation investment continued to drive demand for controls and multi-skilled engineers
⚑️ Skills shortages remained the biggest barrier to growth
⚑️ Retention moved higher up the agenda than ever before

As we head into 2026, cautious optimism is returning, but competition for experienced engineering talent isn’t easing.

Today was about alignment, Data discipline and making sure technology enables consultants capability rather than creating friction.

Xmas Jumper Day in the office πŸŽ„πŸ§₯

Festive jumpers everywhere. Strong energy across the business. A reminder that culture is built in the small moments not just the big strategic ones.

We played some great competitive games. Plenty of banter focus and healthy rivalry. Might need VAR next year πŸ‘€βš½οΈ

A great chance to step away from the day to day and just enjoy being together as a team. These moments matter. They build trust strengthen relationships and create the environment where people genuinely want to give their best.

We even had a kids party running alongside it which added to the atmosphere. Families involved laughter everywhere and a real sense of togetherness across the business.

🎁I opened my present which was AI themed. Very on brand. A nice nod to where we are heading as a business without overthinking it, with a lovely message thanks Morelle Chodosh MREC

It has been a full on week with two full days in London πŸš† immersed in strategic conversations on the 2026 roadmap, exploring the Autumn Budget impacts πŸ“Š and advancing discussions on how will redefine our industry πŸ€–.

These conversations reinforced that recruitment is entering a transformative era. Organisations that embed AI with purpose while keeping people at the centre will set the pace for the next decade.

On a personal note I had a proud Dad moment πŸŽ‰ as my eldest passed her driving test first time πŸš—. A milestone that cut through a fast moving week and reminded me why we do what we do. Plus time flies.

I also connected with some outstanding people 🀝 who continue to influence the direction of our sector. The collaboration was exceptional.

Thanks to Bullhorn and OneUp Sales for the Invites and Hospitality.

The schedule was relentless but the lift selfies πŸ“Έ are always a bonus.
