It was lovely to see all our bell ringers participating in the Nation-wide half-muffled ringing at midday today in respect of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Bolton Branch came up trumps with a fantastic four-day ringing bonanza over the Jubilee weekend and in the process managed to get six people through their first quarter peal. Why not watch their video of the four-day event.

We are really pleased that this promotional video has been released having been filmed by the Churches Conservation Trust before the pandemic. Our thanks to George Reynolds for his film-making expertise and thanks to all the bell ringers who took part and made this possible. Enjoy!

All Souls Guild of Church Bell ringers was formed in 2017 with a mission to start up a home-grown band completely from scratch and to promote the art of bell ringing in the community. This is our success story so far…
The eight bells of All Souls were installed for the dedication of the church in June 1881 and were rung regularly for services and other important occasions until 1986, when the church closed, and then they were only rung occasionally by visiting bands of ringers.
In 2004 local community members approached the owner of the building - The Churches Conservation Trust - to explore putting it back into use as a community facility and social space. Following extensive consultation with the local community and a project development grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, The Churches Conservation Trust has transformed All Souls into a community building. An innovative design has seen the installation of pods within the church creating ‘a building within a building’, a design that has left the historic fabric largely untouched. All Souls is now a thriving business and community centre with a focus on heritage and education.
As part of the re-generation of All Souls, The Churches Conservation Trust replaced all the bell ropes, refitted the tenor (the heaviest bell) and also repaired the windows in the ringing room to keep the wind and the rain out!
In June 2017, three years after the reopening of the community centre and after giving the ringing room a make-over, the bells of All Souls rang out once again. On this occasion, we invited a local band of ringers to ring in memory of Private Thomas Knowles, a bell ringer at the church who gave his life in WW1 one hundred years ago.
As a consequence of this occasion, we had a few enquiries from people who were keen to learn the art and by the end of the year, there were eight beginners. One year on and through an on-going recruitment programme and the Ringing Remembers campaign, we now have a total of 18 enthusiastic new bell ringers! All our learners are actively completing the Association of Ringing Teachers ‘Learning the Ropes’ programme, with many successfully achieving their Level 1. Several of our learners use All Souls as a community centre and two of them work in the building.
In addition to our newly-formed band, we are passionate about promoting the art of bell ringing and have held Open Tower Days, arranged Scout group visits and are currently working in partnership with Bolton School students with their voluntary service placement.
