I keep seeing people asking for “good, trustworthy consultants” to help set up a children’s home, so I just want to add a bit of perspective…

A consultant isn’t always needed.

If you’re a director with solid experience in children’s residential care, then technically you already have the knowledge needed to get a home up and running. That’s your experience, your insight, and in most cases, that’s enough.
If your plan is to be hands-off, then the very first step is still the same:

You need a property with the correct planning permission.

If you genuinely have no idea about planning requirements, then yes — a planning consultant can help. But if you already know the basics of children’s homes and the regulatory framework, you can also recruit a responsible individual early on and be clear about the support you need (e.g., a full setup role).

There are also many experienced Registered Managers who already know how to set up a home from scratch. Don’t overlook the talent that exists within the sector.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t use a consultant. If you simply want extra guidance, reassurance or someone to double-check your work, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.

I’m just sharing what also works — and reminding people that consultants are optional, not mandatory.
