Tip of the day: Always be prepared to provide references, even if you do not want to include them on your CV or job application. They will be asked for. Be prepared and take the names, addresses and telephone numbers of your references in case they are asked for during the interview. If possible provide them from employers, however, if your applying for your first job a reference from a tutor is fine.

Tip of the day: Update your CV! If you've uploaded your CV onto jobsites such as Monster, make sure you've put on it your current job and any other job's you've had since you originally uploaded it. You will be more likely to be considered for a role by a recruiter if it's up to date. CV's that are six months out of date are more then likely to be ignored.

Tip of the day: For anyone going for a sales position. Find out what your targets will be before you go. Then create a plan, and tell your potential employers about it. That way you will prove that you don't have to be micro-managed and can be trusted to achieve what they expect you to.

Tip of the day: When applying for jobs think realistically about how far you are prepared, to travel for work. Use Google maps, street view and other tools available. Also decide if your going to drive to work or travel by public transport. It will save you the trouble of having to find another job if the journey time is unrealistic.

Tip of the day: When writing your CV tailor it for each individual job application. One size doesn't fit all, so think closely about the vacancy, what your skills are and why they fit that role. Then tweak your CV to emphasise these skills. Generic CV's do your application no justice at all. Also, write a good cover letter explaining why your applying for the role and why you think you'd fit it.

Tip of the day: Once you've sent your CV out, don't assume it's been read. Follow up with a phone call to check that it's been received. It shows your keen, and you can rest assured knowing that the company or agency have seen it.

Tip of the day: Today's tip is a fairly obvious one, but something that applicants often fail to do, and therefore lose out on the possibility of a job offer. Research the company who are interviewing you. Visit their website and get to know what they do. Quite often they will ask if you have done this in the interview. If you do, you will look interested in the company and eager to work there, therefore giving any potential employer a good impression. It may only take a hour of your time, but you could end up with that all important job offer!

Tip of the day: For any junior web developers or designers. Always create a portfolio of your work to show potential employers what you can do. Work on your own websites, or volunteer to design a website for a charity for example. Employers need to see what sort of work you can produce and a portfolio is the perfect thing to show them.

01/08/2013

Tip of the day: When putting together your CV always include a "brag list" of achievements in the job's you've had, not just the duties. You need to sell to potential employers, what your skills, abilities and achievements are. And of course, the first place they look is at your CV!

31/07/2013

Tip of the day: When writing your CV always include, as high up on the CV as possible, a Profile section, where you briefly describe your work history, skills and achievements. Quite often it will be the first thing that potential employers read.

Tip of the day: Know where your going! Make sure you know exactly where your interview is well before you start off. Knowing where your going, and arriving early is one of the best ways of keeping calm before your interview, and aim to get there about 20 minutes early. What with things like Street View, there is no excuse for getting lost!
