This vision was to serve business communities nationally. As my dear friend Zafar Iqbal Mbe has now stepped
away from frontline politics, after around 14 years as a Birmingham City Councillor and a year serving as Lord Mayor, I wanted to personally appreciate him for his service to the wider community and wish him well in his work in the voluntary and community sector.

Having known and worked with former Lord Mayor Zafar Iqbal MBE through our office presence in Tyseley for many years, I have always found him to be professional, straightforward and a man of his word.

I’ve often said that we should look beyond party labels and judge people on their character, capability, intentions and the impact they make and the former Lord Mayor is someone I have always highly respected for his commitment to the area and the people he served.

Thank you for your years of service to Birmingham and to Tyseley and Hay Mills. Wishing you good health, happiness and every success in the next chapter.

‘Amanah’ at Aston University Leaders programme.

A number of you have asked for more information on my previous post about this and what I spoke about and therefore I have done this as a follow up post.

I delivered a seminar session with senior leaders at Aston University this week as part of the Elevate! Senior Leadership Programme.

I spoke about Amanah, but I didn’t use that word in the room. That was deliberate.

Sometimes people get fixated or hung up on a word or phrase itself. I didn’t want the word to become the distraction. I wanted us to relax, understand and discuss the responsibility behind leadership.

Amanah carries a very simple but powerful meaning. It is trust. It is responsibility. It is honour. It is something placed in your care. And leadership is exactly that.

My dad used to say that his title as President of the Zia-Ul-Quran Mosque in Alum Rock, Birmingham, was not his. In that same regard, your title is not yours.

Your position is not yours.
Your influence is not yours.
Your power is not yours.
It is all entrusted to you.
Think of it as being on loan.

Every decision you make, every action you take, every silence you allow, and everything you permit or promote proves whether you are worthy of that trust or not.

That is the part of leadership we do not talk about enough.
Too many people with power treat it like a possession, as if it is their entitlement. They hold onto it. Protect it. Use it to feel important.

But leadership is not ownership. It is stewardship.

You cannot hide behind clever words. You cannot hide behind other people. You cannot hide behind being busy, strategic or senior.
People eventually experience the truth of your leadership.

They experience whether you are reliable. Whether you do what you said you would do. Whether you take responsibility when things are difficult.

Not just having authority, but being accountable for its results and outcomes, and how you have used it.

Thank you to Aston University for their kind invitation and the honour given.
