While there is a lack of digital skills in the workforce, there’s not a lack of potential talent. Businesses across Europe, of all sizes, need to work more effectively with government agencies and non-profits to introduce catch up schemes, training/reskilling programmes and job guarantees, to help prepare youth for work.

The skills needed to bridge the digital skills gap aren’t learnt over night, there’s no quick fix. However, investing in the development of your current talent, and future talent, will help to begin to fill the current skill gaps and equip the next generation with the talents needed for long-term economic recovery.

It’s proving very difficult for companies to move beyond the digital skills gap. Workers with digital skills are rare, they are hard to find and expensive to hire. The best people are taken, and they are well looked after. So, what can businesses do to continue to grow through the digital skills crisis?

In response to the digital skills crisis, the government has invested in our future technical talent, pushing funding towards STEM courses and tech based apprenticeships. This funding will create thousands of technical graduates, to take on junior and entry level roles by 2025. This means that now is the ideal time to be investing in your current teams, growing your current talent into your future senior roles.

A lack of training during a time of mass digital transformation is contributing towards skills challenges and could exclude employees from career progression. According to CWJob’s ‘Tackling Tech training’ report, only 9% of companies have trained all relevant staff in the required technology. One of the most noticeable gaps in training was in analytical tools, where less that 4% of companies had trained up all necessary staff. This was followed by software platforms (8%) and cloud infrastructure (8%).
