Reflecting on brilliant day out in Mid Cornwall last week with the Level 2 General Farm Worker apprentices.

The day was packed with hands-on learning, practical discussion, and real industry experience β€” exactly what agricultural apprenticeships are all about.

Our learners explored how dairy cow diets change at different stages of production, comparing the three different rations used on the farm and discussing the vital role nutrition plays in performance, welfare, and overall herd health.

We were also fortunate enough to witness a cow calving β€” a fantastic real-life learning opportunity β€” and saw first-hand the farm’s excellent standards of animal care, including providing a revive drink as part of their post-calving routine.

Experiences like these give our apprentices the opportunity to build confidence, develop practical skills, and gain valuable insight into the realities of modern farming.

A fantastic trip to Calvert Devon with Level 3 Outdoor Apprentices! πŸ‘

The group spent the day developing their understanding of inclusive coaching in the outdoors, exploring specialised equipment and PPE, and learning how to create environments where participants with complex needs feel fully supported, included, and comfortable.

Experiences like these are so valuable in helping our apprentices build the confidence, knowledge, and practical skills needed to deliver meaningful and accessible outdoor activities for everyone.

A brilliant day of learning, teamwork, and professional development!

Our Lead Early Years Trainer, Emma, had an inspiring day attending Nursery World’s Big Day Out in Islington on Friday. 🌿✨

The event brought together passionate early years professionals from across the sector to explore fresh ideas, share experiences, and celebrate the future of early years education.

It was great to explore the power of outdoor learning and discuss how urban spaces can also become exciting environments for children to learn, play, and grow β€” proving that meaningful learning experiences can happen anywhere!

It was also a fantastic opportunity to network with like-minded practitioners and gain valuable insights to bring back into our training.

What a brilliant day full of passion, innovation, and inspiration for the next generation of early years practitioners!

Another busy week for our agriculture apprentices πŸŒ±πŸšœπŸ„

Last week, apprentices visited Stanterton Farm. The visit gave learners the opportunity to see day-to-day farm management in action and connect their apprenticeship learning with real working environments.

Yesterday’s session focused on one of the most important parts of any successful farm β€” soil health.

The group carried out soil sampling, explored soil structure and texture, and investigated how compaction and acidity can impact grass growth and productivity. Using samples brought in from apprentices’ own farms, learners worked together to identify issues and discuss practical solutions to improve long-term soil performance and sustainability.

One sample brought in by Finn highlighted poor grass growth caused by compacted, acidic soil β€” likely linked to the field previously being used for horses over a long period of time. A great real-world example of how soil management directly affects productivity.

We also welcomed a very enthusiastic new apprentice who seemed far more interested in eating the workbooks than completing them... πŸ”πŸ“š

At Skern Skills, we’re proud to deliver practical, industry-led learning that helps apprentices build confidence, capability and real career skills in agriculture and farming.
