Does size matter?

This giant purple dahlia is genuinely bigger than my head.

Growing outside my window and nurtured by my husband, it's become something of a local celebrity.

Maybe that's the secret: the best growth comes from care, patience, and being prepared to stand in the muck every now and then.

Unlike the dahlia, I'm still waiting for my growth spurt.

One thing I never skip? Taking a step back and looking for patterns.

Possibly the vet in me.

Whether it's practice performance, team challenges or growth opportunities, I've always been someone who notices the things that don't quite fit or the trends that are starting to emerge.

In practice, spotting patterns early can prevent problems down the line. In business, it's often exactly the same.

I've learned that taking the time to look beyond what's immediately in front of you usually reveals where your attention is needed most.

And if you let it slide?

Small issues become bigger ones. Opportunities get missed. You're left reacting to problems instead of getting ahead of them.

For me, creating that space to step back and assess what's really happening isn't a luxury. It's one of the most valuable parts of managing and growing a veterinary business.

My name is Wendy Hough. I'm a vet with a passion for the business side of practice. Through Vet2Vet Talent, I support practices with operations, leadership, recruitment and business improvement. I really enjoy analysing data and identifying patterns and am equally passionate about the people behind the numbers. Great practices are built by great teams and I enjoy helping veterinary businesses create environments where people can thrive, grow, and deliver exceptional care.

If you disappeared from your practice for a week with no explanation, what would you come back to?

Here's what I see again and again. Capable, experienced teams who've quietly learned not to make decisions. Not because they can't, but because for years, someone (probably you) kept solving things faster than they could try.

Servant leadership is genuinely valuable, but when it becomes the only gear you have, you end up with a team that's dependent rather than empowered and a leader who's exhausted and indispensable in all the wrong ways.

The shift isn't about doing less. It's about being clearer. Who actually owns what in your clinic? Do your team members have a defined role beyond their clinical function and when someone brings you a problem, are you solving it or are you asking them what they think the next step is? Those small changes compound fast.

The practices I see thrive aren't the ones with the most hands on clinical director or manager. They're the ones where the leader has invested so deeply in the people around them that the team doesn't skip a beat without them. Building that kind of team isn't a nice to have. It's the most important clinical and business decision you'll make.

Fight from behind

England have trailed in this tournament more than once and still standing in the semi final.

Your practice will have weeks like that too. The rota falls apart. A key vet hands in their notice. You realise you have a compliance risk. You're behind before you've even had coffee.

The teams that go home early panic the moment they go behind. The ones still standing tomorrow are the ones with a plan for exactly that moment, a system they trust, a substitution ready to go, the discipline to keep playing their own game instead of chasing the scoreline.

Tomorrow, millions of fans watch to see if England can do it again and reach the final. Tonight, ask yourself: does your practice have a plan for the bad days, or just a hope that they won't come?

⚽ Kick off 8pm. Show us you can do it.

Camouflage level - expert 🐾

I see you.

In veterinary practice, things have a funny way of hiding, until they don't. A dip in client retention. A team culture issue. A process that quietly stopped working six months ago.

The best practice leaders aren't just great clinicians. They're great at spotting what's lurking in the long grass before it becomes a real problem.

Stay curious. Stay observant and maybe keep your grass a little shorter.

Who's inside that fence and why aren't you?

Top performing veterinary practices don't get there by accident. They make deliberate choices about who they are, who they serve and where they're going.

If you feel like you're on the outside of the success you're working towards, the answer rarely lies in working harder.

It lies in thinking differently.

Have you ever told your team they can call you a muppet/idiot/fool (insert your derogatory term of choice).
Not as a habit, but because if they can't, you'll never know when you're getting it wrong.
I have definitely confused being nice with being kind. They're not the same thing.

Being too nice means swallowing feedback, softening messages until they mean nothing, letting things slide. The person on the receiving end never gets the chance to improve, until suddenly it's too late for a quiet word and you're having a much bigger conversation than you ever wanted.

That's not kindness.

Most people actually want honest feedback. They want to know where they stand. They want the chance to get better. A straight, well timed conversation is one of the most respectful things you can do for someone. It says "I believe you can handle this and I care enough to say it."
If you lead a veterinary practice and you're avoiding those conversations, about performance, about standards, about what's not working, I understand. I've been there too.

It's also the thing most likely to stall your growth.

I couldn't pass this face and not take a picture 🐑

The Valais Blacknose is a masterclass in differentiation, one look and you never forget it.

Your vet practice should work the same way. Clients have choices. What makes them choose you, stay with you and tell their friends about you?

That's not a marketing question. It's a leadership one.

Happy to chat if you're figuring out the answer.

Something shifted over the last four weeks.
I made a quiet commitment to show up more regularly here and what I didn't expect was what it gave me back.
Every time I sat down to write, I found myself getting clearer. Not just about what to say, but about why I do this work.
The big thing I'm taking away is consistency isn't just a content habit. It's a clarity tool. The more regularly I showed up, the more focused I became on what actually matters, helping practices thrive.
That's what I want to carry forward. Not just the posting, but the discipline of asking why and letting that answer sharpen everything else.

Has anyone else found that showing up more regularly in any area of life has brought unexpected clarity?
