We were delighted to sponsor another Women in Business NI HR Leaders Forum at Custom House Belfast bringing together HR leaders to share experiences, ideas and practical approaches to some of the biggest workforce challenges facing organisations today.

The discussion focused on Talent Retention, Workforce Planning and Skills Shortages, exploring everything from retaining talent beyond salary to building stronger internal talent pipelines.

Some of the key themes included:

– Creating a compelling employee proposition through purpose, flexibility and autonomy
– Making career development and progression more visible
– Looking beyond today’s vacancies to plan for tomorrow’s skills
– Developing talent internally through apprenticeships, graduate programmes and training
– Balancing the need to build, buy and retain skills
– Using bursaries and funded development to attract talent into hard-to-fill areas

One message came through particularly strongly: retention starts with giving people a reason to see their future within your organisation.

For HR leaders, conversations like these provide an opportunity to step back from the day-to-day, share what is working, hear different perspectives and consider how other organisations are approaching similar challenges.

What does the future of finance look like when AI, risk and business change are all moving at pace? 🤔

We were delighted to be at the NI Chamber’s Future of Finance: Leading through AI, Risk & Business Change event, with our Managing Director, Barbara McKiernan joining the panel to share her perspective alongside a fantastic group of industry leaders including:

- John Campbell, Economics and Business Editor, BBC
- Conall Mac Coille, Chief Economist, Bank of Ireland
- Paul Hollway, Chief Financial Officer, FinTrU
- Brian Mallon, Head of Finance, HR and Business Development, Ulster GAA
- Oliver Grzymek, Finance Director, Decora Blind Systems
- Nico Vorster, Head of Finance & Commercial, Nomadic Watches

Our Senior Accountancy Practice Recruitment Specialist, Emma Jayne Bowen, also attended, and this was her biggest takeaway:

"For me, the strongest message from the morning was that AI may change the work finance professionals do, but people will determine how successfully businesses navigate that change. That has a direct impact on recruitment.

The strongest candidates won't necessarily be those with the most technical experience on paper but will be the people who combine strong finance expertise with communication skills, commercial judgement, adaptability and the ability to build relationships."

A great day out, a bit of friendly competition and probably more singing than our bus driver signed up for… 🎶

Last week, the VANRATH team headed to Portrush for our quarterly away day and end-of-summer celebration, taking some time out to celebrate the hard work everyone has put in over the last few months.

We kicked things off with some sausage and bacon baps in the office before heading on our trip up to Portrush which was shortly followed by some very competitive (and questionable) rounders on the beach. 🏏

Then it was over to Ramore for lunch and drinks before jumping back on the bus to Belfast. The cheesy tunes were blasting and the singing was in full swing (we can only apologise to our bus driver for having to endure over an hour of what can only be described as a group of screaming/wailing cats...) There are videos, but they'll stay on our phones for now...

A few of us then carried on to Bullitt Hotel for a couple more drinks before eventually dispersing for the weekend. 🥂

Days like this are a great reminder of the people behind everything we do at VANRATH. We work hard, celebrate together and, most importantly, enjoy working with each other.

A good first week deserves a good breakfast 🥐☕

On Wednesday morning, some of the team took our newest team members, Ollie Booth and James McIntosh, out for breakfast at to celebrate their first week at VANRATH!

It was a nice way to take some time away from the desk, get to know each other and properly welcome the new guys to the team.

It's never too late for a proper welcome ☕️

Last week, our Finance Recruitment team (and Legal Recruitment Specialist, Ciaran Gallagher) recently headed to Neighbourhood Café for lunch to welcome Sean Reffell and Jordan Brown to VANRATH.

They’ve actually been with us for a few weeks now, but with busy diaries and getting stuck into their new roles, we’re only just getting round to the proper welcome (but better late than never!)

It was a great chance to step away from the day-to-day, catch up as a team and get to know Sean and Jordan a little better.

We the week with a bit of a reset 🧘‍♀️

On Monday morning, some of our team took part in a 9D Breathwork session with Kelly Nixon, who some of you may remember from her time as a Senior Tech Recruitment Specialist here at VANRATH.

Kelly has since taken a completely different path, launching her own business, , and we were delighted to welcome her back to the office to give the team a taste of what she does.

The 30-minute immersive session combined guided breathing, visualisation and 9D spatial audio, with a focus on clearing mental noise, improving focus and getting into a more energised, focused state. 🎧

It was certainly a different way to start a Monday morning, and a great opportunity for the team to step away from the usual routine, switch off for a while and try something new.

It's also been brilliant to see what Kelly has built since her time at VANRATH. From recruitment to running her own wellbeing business, she's taken a completely new direction and we're delighted to have been able to experience it first-hand.

What a week it was for Belfast. 🎶

Last week, Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann brought more than one million people to Belfast, filling the city’s streets with music, dancing, culture, food, drink and plenty of craic.

It was also a huge boost for the local economy, with initial estimates suggesting the Fleadh brought an additional £53 million into Belfast. 💸

And we couldn’t let the week pass without getting involved ourselves so we finished up a little early on Thursday and headed to The Donegal to soak up some of the Fleadh's atmosphere with the team. It was great to see the city buzzing around us.

The Fleadh showcased Belfast at its best, bringing people together from across the world and giving local businesses a fantastic boost. A million visitors, £53 million for the local economy and a week full of music, culture and craic. We were very glad to be part of it. 🎻🍻

Can't wait until 2027 to do it all over again!
