În ultimii cinci ani, România a promovat activ o inițiativă de modernizare a forțelor sale armate, transformând un arsenal moștenit din epoca sovietică într-unul dintre cele mai dinamice programe de achiziții în domeniul apărării din cadrul NATO.

Ministerul Apărării Naționale a majorat cheltuielile pentru apărare de la sub 2% din PIB la aproximativ 2,5–2,8%, a solicitat 57 de miliarde de lei (cca. 11,5 miliarde de euro) pentru anul 2026 și a obținut, în mai 2026, fonduri în valoare de 16,68 miliarde de euro prin mecanismul UE SAFE – a doua cea mai mare alocare SAFE după cea a Poloniei, cu aproximativ 9,6–10 miliarde de euro destinate achizițiilor pentru perioada 2026–2030. Această amplă campanie de achiziții vizează avioane de vânătoare, tancuri, artilerie, nave de război, drone și sisteme de apărare aeriană, provenind din SUA, Coreea de Sud, Germania, Turcia, Franța, Norvegia și Israel. Aproape fiecare contract major implică și transferul producției sau al activităților de mentenanță către industria românească; oficialii estimează un grad mediu de localizare de aproximativ 50–60%.

In the last five years, Romania has been actively pursuing an initiative to modernize its armed forces, converting a Soviet-legacy arsenal into one of NATO's most active defence-procurement programs.

The Romanian MOD has raised defence spending from below 2% of GDP to roughly 2.5–2.8%, requested 57 billion lei (~€11.5B) for 2026, and secured €16.68 billion in EU SAFE loans in May 2026 — the second-largest SAFE allocation after Poland, with ~€9.6–10B earmarked for 2026–2030 procurement. The buying spree spans fighter jets, tanks, artillery, warships, drones and air defense, sourced from the US, South Korea, Germany, Turkey, France, Norway and Israel. Nearly every major contract also shifts production or sustainment into Romanian industry — officials cite ~50–60% average localization.
