2522 (Bedlington) Squadron – Navigation Training Activity Summary

Cadets took part in a series of navigational exercises in beautiful Northumberland surroundings, following a route that incorporated sections of the Northumberland Coastal Path and St Cuthbert’s Way. Along the route, cadets explored elements of local history, including a visit to St Cuthbert’s Cave, and stopped at industrial heritage sites such as the historic lime kilns.

Throughout the activity, cadets practiced key map‑reading, route‑planning, and terrain‑awareness skills. The experience gained today will stand every participant in excellent stead as they prepare for their upcoming DofE Bronze Expedition.

2522 (BEDLINGTON) SQUADRON CADETS TAKE ON THE SIMONSIDE HILLS

Cadets from 2522 (Bedlington) Squadron spent the day trekking across the Simonside Hills, putting their navigation, teamwork, and resilience into practice. The route took them through some of Northumberland’s most striking landscapes, from forest trails to open moorland with sweeping views across the county. A chance to pay our respects to another airman who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Day treks like this are more than just a good walk. They build confidence, map‑reading skills, leadership, and the sense of camaraderie that has always been at the heart of the Air Cadets. For many young people, it’s experiences like these that spark a lifelong interest in aviation, adventure and service.

A great achievement by all involved

A huge well done to the cadets of 2522 (Bedlington) Squadron who competed in the 2026 Inter‑Squadron Volleyball Competition. No medals on this occasion, but plenty of grit, teamwork, and squadron pride on display throughout.

Next up: the Inter‑Squadron Athletics Competition, time to reset, refocus, and show what we can do on the track and field.

It was music night at the squadron this week's, with cadets starting their journey to the blue music badge. After a theory session the recorders came out and the music started. After a very short time music was heard, a great effort by all.

Please share in the hope that our friends at 1000 (Blyth) Squadron Air Cadets get their trailer returned.

Hi, our compound was broken into over the weekend and our trailer filled various tents, gazebos, sports equipment etc. stolen. The purpose of this post is to see if anyone has seen this trailer and/or any further information as to where it is or who stole it. Our compound is opposite the Crematorium on Cowpen Road. If you do have info then please let us know, the equipment and trailer were bought following extensive fundraising by the cadets themselves and are very expensive to replace!

I had the absolute pleasure of visiting Dorothy, Flt Lt Morton and the 2522 (Bedlington) Squadron RAF Air Cadets to present them with a cheque from the Asda Foundation for £500. I spoke to Dorothy the treasurer for them and she explained they were looking to buy new compasses and other training equipment with the funding.

2522 (Bedlington) Squadron RAF Air Cadets is a local youth organisation based on Waverley Drive, Bedlington, offering aviation training, flying, gliding, and adventure activities for young people aged 12–17. Congratulations to Sgt Cowan – MOI Achieved!

Tonight we are incredibly proud to recognise Sgt Cowan, who has officially been awarded his Method of Instruction (MOI) Lanyard.

This achievement marks a major milestone in his cadet journey. The MOI qualification isn’t just a badge or a certificate, it represents real commitment, hard work, and the ability to deliver high‑quality training to others. Sgt Cowan has shown maturity, confidence, and a genuine passion for supporting the development of younger cadets.

We’re excited to see him bring his skills, enthusiasm, and leadership to the classroom.

Well done, Sgt Cowan, a fantastic achievement and thoroughly deserved.

During the school half term 16 members of the Squadron spent 5 days in London on Exercise Capital Adventure. The week enabled our cadets to undertake a series of visits across our Capital city including:

- the RAF Museum Hendon,
- A tour of the RAF club, who treated us to tea and biscuits,
- the Imperial War Museum,
- the Tower of London
- a walking tour of the sights of central London
- the Battle of Britain Bunker at Uxbridge

and lots more besides.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable and educational week which for the majority of cadets was both their first camp and their first time in London. We were joined by cadets from 131 (City of Newcastle), 242 (Cramlington) and 1000 (Blyth) Squadrons with many new friendships being made.

The aim of the visit was to support project work focused on the development of air power. Next stop the WW1 battlefields and airfields around Ypres, Belgium.
