Scarification vs Dethatching: What's the Difference?
Most people use these two terms interchangeably, but they're actually quite different processes β and using the wrong one at the wrong time can do more harm than good to your lawn. πΏ
Scarification is the more intensive of the two. It uses rotating blades to cut into the soil surface, removing not just the thatch layer (that mat of dead grass and organic debris sitting just above the soil) but also moss and compacted material that blocks water and nutrients from reaching the roots. Dethatching, on the other hand, is a lighter, more targeted process. It uses spring-tined rakes or a dethatching machine to pull up that surface layer of dead organic matter without breaking into the soil itself. If your lawn has a thatch build-up of less than around 1cm, dethatching is usually sufficient. Any more than that and scarification is likely the better call. The key is knowing which your lawn actually needs β throwing a scarifier at a lawn that only needs light dethatching can leave it looking worse before it gets better. Have you had your lawn scarified before, or is this something you've been putting off? π
