Trainee Recruitment Consultant

Location: Banbridge

Compensation: Basic Salary, plus commission.
Year one total on target earnings - £35-40k
Year two total on target earnings - £45-60k

Oscar James Partners are a boutique legal recruitment firm with a sole interest at Partner level within Private Practice. On a yearly basis we broker millions of pounds worth of Partner compensations and even more so when it comes to their collective portable blocks of business.
We are a relatively new company but with well over 20 years of collective recruitment experience, our foundations contain a tremendous legacy. Our detailed knowledge of the executive segment of the private practice recruitment sphere has allowed us to forge some fantastic relationships and as a result of this, Oscar James Partners is going from strength to strength. What is the role?

You will learn the business from the ground up, get to understand the intricate data that makes our business tick and how to communicate with our intelligent and often demanding client base.

You will be trained to eventually take complete ownership of a predefined and very specific part of our existing client portfolio and you will be mandated to incubate, nurture, and develop it.
Our clients are diverse, they range from small boutique local firms through to international institutions.

On a daily basis you will engage with movers and shakers within the legal world either assisting them with a highly confidential and discrete exploration of their career options or assisting well regarded law firms in the acquisition of their next Partner level hires.

Who do we seek?

In order to achieve the next stage in our development, we seek a professional individual who has an eye for detail and an ability to spot opportunities.

The ideal person will be a commercial and entrepreneurial thinker who is not only a self-starter but has a thirst for knowledge and self-improvement.

As an organisation driven not just by relationships but by data, we are on an endless quest to ensure our information is up to date, accurate and always evolving. Chiefly, it is this data that has allowed us to be at the forefront of some of the most exciting recruitment transactions within the legal marketplace in both the UK and Ireland over the past few years.

The task of gathering data and entering it onto our CRM database is a big one. We harvest the majority of our candidate information from LinkedIn and whilst there are automated tools out there that could do the job for us, they don’t come close to the level of accuracy that we demand.

Our client data is harvested from the internet and the accuracy of this information is equally important.

In the early stages, this role would involve 100% computer work and full training would be provided. You would learn about the different practice areas in the world of law firms, learn about the different hierarchies that exist and learn how to accurately transpose this onto our bespoke CRM database.

Who do we seek?

We require a competent individual with exceptional attention to detail, a willingness to learn and good computer skills.
There is the future opportunity for this to progress to a Trainee Recruitment Consultant role where earning potential is significant and uncapped.

"Six Months, Five Years, and One Very Real Journey into Scaling a Business"

After five years of building my business from the ground up, I decided to open a new office. That was six months ago. Since then, it’s been a whirlwind—exciting, exhausting, expensive—and absolutely worth talking about.

The move wasn’t just a physical one. It meant shifting from working solo at home for four years, to showing up in an office five days a week. That in itself has been an adjustment. But it was necessary. For the culture. For the team. For the long game.

I spent the first 21 days sanding, painting, rewiring, and fixing up the space myself—after hours, before hours, in-between calls. Why? Because money matters. Paying tradesmen wasn't an option, not with the costs of desks, laptops, screens, phones and everything else we needed just to function.

Bringing in new colleagues has been brilliant, but it’s come with its own emotional and logistical overheads. We’re getting to know each other. Figuring out how we share knowledge. How we communicate. How we operate. I want to create a culture that encourages autonomy and initiative—without micromanaging. Setting expectations without becoming the boss I never wanted to work for.

And in the background? The very real, very personal stress of watching savings go not into my dream home, but into keeping everything afloat—paying someone else’s mortgage while delaying my own. That’s the reality of small business growth no one posts about.

All this is happening in what is possibly the toughest market we've seen in over a decade. Recruitment is tougher. Law firms are hesitant. The economy is wobbling. And let’s not even get into the impact of national insurance hikes.

But still—we move forward. Because it matters. Because I believe in what I’m building. And because growth never happens in comfort.

If you're a business owner doing something similar—whether it's your first hire, your tenth office, or your latest pivot—you're not alone. Behind every "we’re expanding!" announcement is usually a spreadsheet full of costs, a diary full of doubts, and a head full of late-night worries.

Here's to all of us doing it anyway.

And here I am, doing why I do it....

Time with my wife, my kids, my family & friends and my family & friends kids AND Ralph (the dog).

Here's to the next 6 months, the next 5 years and the same one very real journey.

So, Ralph has started his first shift in a proper office today. By nature he's pretty lazy and as such has only committed to half of an afternoon, once a week. Also, he won't be coming in on any half terms or at all during the summer months.

So far, he has tried out his new bed, and cried at something he saw outside.

Hopefully he becomes more productive in his role as time goes on.
