Did you know that most recruiters & hiring managers will make a decision to shortlist or not in around 10 seconds?

I’ve prepared a check list based on my experience, not a generic one from AI, which may be useful for you to review if you’re currently applying for roles.

💜 Location-if the role isn’t remote & you live in a different part of the UK, it’s best to specify if you are planning on relocating
💜 Include your location (yes even for remote roles)
💜 Email address “appropriate/suitable” for business
💜 Font in Ariel 11
💜 Put headings in bold
💜 Detail responsibilities in a bulleted list
💜 Outline achievements of recent roles
💜 Education at the bottom with professional qualifications first followed by Uni/School ones
💜 Run a spell check
💜 keep a copy in pdf & word
💜 2-4 pages taking into account length of career
💜 Clear, crisp, easy to review
💜 Mirror your experience on Linked In profile
💜 Briefly state interests & hobbies
💜 Make it a “dream” to review

❌ No dates of birth
❌ No photos
❌ No fancy formats/layouts unless you’re a Graphic Designer!
❌ Don’t squeeze a 30 year career history into 2 pages (try 4)
❌ Don’t have more than 4 pages
❌ No lengthy paragraphs
❌ No hidden tables
❌ No “work experience” unless you’re applying for your first role
❌ No “Z’s” in words ie organized

Have you ever changed your mind about a company as been swayed by a colleague?

I was chatting with a candidate this week who had previously been put forward to a mutual client by another agency, & I asked them how they got on…

They said to me that they decided not to pursue the opportunity because of something they had heard from talking to a colleague.

💜 The company is an excellent employer with longevity from staff members & a fantastic reputation in the industry

💜 One size certainly doesn’t fit all as the saying goes

💜 What suits you may not suit another

💜 You may have different strengths and career aspirations

💜 You may have different non- negotiables

💜 It can be so easy to be swayed and influenced by family, friends & colleagues

💜 Your requirements for job satisfaction & career development may be very different to theirs

💜 Take into consideration timings as companies evolve, people come and go & team dynamics then change as a result

💜 How it was working for a company then may be very different to now & maybe different to tomorrow

💜 So in essence explore all opportunities, gain a “feel & flavour” for the company culture & the vibe

💜 Make your own decision & don’t be swayed by external influences

💜 Be your own person, go with your gut instinct & make your own mind up

💜 At the end of the day, it’s your career & no one else’s

Do you live your life for the weekend?

If so, maybe it’s time to consider a new role?

You only get 52 Mondays a year!

Make sure you’re in a role that you love 💜

You need to enjoy your role, the company which you work with & your colleagues to have a fulfilling career.

If one of these factors can be improved try to change it first.

💜 If you enjoy the company & it’s values align with yours, but you’re not enjoying your role, maybe consider requesting a move to another role or department?

💜 If you don’t think you’re working in the right company for you, and you’ve given it your best shot, maybe consider working in the same role however for a competitor?

💜 If you enjoy working with most of your colleagues but there’s a couple which you don’t particularly get along with, try your hardest, however accept that this will always be the case in all walks of life. Also they may move to another department or change companies at some future stage.
Nothing is permanent.

💜 If you can’t change any of the above maybe it’s time for a change?

Another amazing day spent at this week!

It’s so energising to be at ExCel the vibe was just electric.

💜 I even managed to grab a selfie with who as you can imagine was captivating and so honestly raw and inspiring.

Two things which Baroness Karen said which truly resonated with me are:

“And the truth is if you don’t champion your career no one will champion it for you”, “

“Leading people is really about managing hearts & minds”

💜 I really enjoyed listening to industry legend again and speaking with him too. He even asked me “don’t you ever get tired of listening to me?”

💜 It was great to meet Neil Carberry from the REC again who always keeps us up to date with changes in the industry from a recruiters POV.

💜 I loved learning more about how to implement AI into our every day tasks from the wonderful Wendy McDougall 🐠🐠🐠 from & meeting Gordon Webb in person too.

💜 It was really helpful to listen to Henna Makwana from Rectec® who’s a great public speaker and very engaging, talking about how to navigate the challenges that technology buying presents.

💜 Meeting the exhibitors was great & I managed to get an on brand purple bag too from the lovely guys & some other goodies too.

A trip to Z**i on the way home with the wonderful Liz Nevitt FREC from was the perfect way to finish the day.

Do you know why I have a diamond 💎 in my logo & “ Shine Bright like a Diamond” on my office wall?

The number 1 song in the charts at the time our daughter arrived was yes you guessed it “Shine Bright Like a Diamond” by Rihanna!

It was always on the radio hence I wanted to incorporate it into my company logo as it’s so special.

Also on days like today when I have a banging headache, it gives me a motivational boost.

What’s so special about someone liking my post?

The contact was one of the first candidates I placed in spring 1995 when I started my recruitment career.

I arranged an interview for her at Alfred Reader Cricket Balls near Maidstone and my client actually recruited 2 of my candidates even though only actually had one role. They created a role as were blown away by 2 of my candidates.

So why I am sharing this story with you today?

I 💜my work as much now as I did 29 years ago!

💜 Life is simply too short to be in a role/company/industry which doesn’t give you a kick
💜 Love your industry but not your company values, change companies
💜 Love your company but not your current role, ask if there is an alternative role available
💜 Love your role & company but don’t get on with your manager? Try to work out together how to improve this.
💜 Not enjoying your industry, look at your transferable skills & move sectors

Quite simply, you have options, there are several choices available.

Find something that works for you, something which is going to make a difference to your quality of life, happiness and financial stability too.

Do you look at your communication style when responding to recruiters/hiring managers?

💜 Do you read your emails & messages before sending them with a fresh pair of eyes to “hear the tone”?

💜 If you were to receive your email/message how would it make you feel?

💜 Do you spell check it?

💜 Do you bother to look at the recruiters/hiring managers name?

💜 Have you the correct spelling of the name?

It all sounds basic and obvious doesn’t it?

However sometimes I’m amazed at the quality or lack of it from correspondence received from applicants applying for office based roles where business grammar is key.

Some pointers to take into consideration when you’re next applying for roles and responding to communication.

💜 List 3/4 achievements for each role
💜 Highlight achievements/grades in professional qualifications/training
💜 These can then form discussions at interviews with Recruiters & Talent Acquisition Managers
