What makes a candidate stand out?

We look through a lot of CVs during our searches, so we’ve got a pretty good idea of what catches our eye.

It’s not always about having the most experience.

We look for things like relevant skills and keywords, clear career progression and longevity in previous roles, as well as a CV that is easy to follow and relevant to the opportunity.
But a CV is only the starting point.

The candidates who really stand out to us are often responsive, inquisitive and proactive. They ask questions, show genuine interest in the opportunity and keep us updated throughout the process.

These things might seem small, but they can make a real difference.

Before we start a search, we take the time to understand your business, your team and the dynamics within it.

We’ll talk through what has worked previously, what hasn’t, which requirements are essential, where there’s flexibility and the practical details like location and salary expectations.

When we introduce a candidate, we’ve already measured them against everything we’ve learnt about your business, team and requirements and believe they could be a good fit.

If we’re ever on the fence, it can be useful to have that conversation with you too. Your feedback helps us understand what you’re willing to consider and, importantly, where your non-negotiables lie.

A little flexibility can go a long way 💡

If you're struggling to find the right candidate, it can be worth taking another look at your essential criteria.

We recently worked on a role where the requirements were particularly specific, making it challenging to find suitable candidates. After revisiting the brief, our client identified areas where they could be more flexible without compromising what was genuinely important.

Being open to different backgrounds or transferable skills can open up a much stronger pool of candidates.

Sometimes, a small change in approach can make a big difference. 💙

Whether you've taken time out for travel, caring responsibilities, further study, redundancy, personal reasons or simply needed a break, the important thing is being honest and confident when talking about it.

When asked about a gap, keep your explanation clear and focus on what you've learned, experienced or achieved during that time where relevant.

Most importantly, don't let a gap in your CV define your career. Your skills, experience and what you can bring to your next role are what matter.
