☀️Summer is here and the Care with Dignity fridge freezer is fully stocked for the team ☀️
With a heat wave in full swing we need to remember to look after ourselves to be able to look after others and so we need to keep our whole team hydrated and comfortable.
We hope everyone enjoys the warmer weather but please remember that this is peak season for dehydration and UTIs for our Service users so here are our top tips.
✅ Ensure they drink a full glass of fluids with you at all visits
✅ Leave plenty of fluids accessible in your absence
✅ Set reminder alarms for them to drink
✅ Give or leave foods high in water content (jelly, cucumber, strawberries)
✅ Dress them appropriately (remove jumpers, vests, socks)
✅ Check the heating is off (they love to keep fiddling with that thermostat)
✅ Keep windows and curtains closed in peak heat, let in the breeze when there is one
✅ Get out any cooling systems they have ie fans across a bowl of iced water
✅ Remove flammables from window sills including those ointments you apply to their skin
❌ Dont leave hand sanitiser in hot cars
❌ Don’t ignore confusion, poor mobility or extreme fatigue, REPORT IMMEDIATELY before the fall
❌ Don’t forget the sun cream and hats when out and about
For elderly people, heat waves are genuinely dangerous, not just uncomfortable. Older adults often don’t feel thirst as strongly, can struggle to regulate body temperature, and many medications make dehydration worse.
Remember to check in on our elderly and vulnerable and keep them and yourselves safe. We hope you all have a lovely Summer 😎
