Warning notice. Cover Letter chat incoming...

Love them or loathe them, they can be a massive help to your job search.

Not only to increase the visibility of your relevant skills & experience to the employer, but they're a glorious tool for your own sense of purpose & understanding why you are applying for that role.

You apply for a role because you want to do it, surely? You want to feel like youโ€™re excited to get & do the job? You want to know that thereโ€™s something there to get you up every day? To know that you can in fact DO that job?

Thatโ€™s what a cover letter does. Solidifies your confidence, that:

A) You want to do the role & work for that company, and;
B) You have the right experience and skills to do it.

Building confidence.

AND, and, and, by thinking about your specific experience and skills, and by outlining the โ€˜must haveโ€™sโ€™, youโ€™re getting yourself into the interview mindset. Because these are the answers to the questions that they are likely to be asking you. Winner!

Top tip. Write it from scratch, every, single, time. Employers love it!

Heard or said this before? I think we all have.

When we stop and really connect with who we are, what we want and plan for how we get it, the way we 'sell' ourselves provides a lot more confidence to employers we're trying to work with.

Every hiring manager wants to see the true and confident version of the candidate they are meeting. They need to know that person is not only capable of doing the role they've applied for, but want to be there and will connect with the business & it's people.

Take time to define that employee brand, enjoy getting to know yourself more and watch the impact it can have on getting the success you deserve.

It's been a while.

The coaching never truly ended, like re-runs of Friends, it just keeps going and going hopefully helping people in it's special way when they've got nothing else to watch, or talk to in my case.

But we're back plugging chat about Employability, applying for jobs with confidence and trying to get job seekers to see past the unnecessary wall that employers have created when they are hiring.

Time to talk about enjoying everything that building our careers can bring.

More to come, but if you're looking for career advice, CV help, want to apply for a job with a smile, or have an interview coming up, heck maybe it's everything, let's chat.

Fit like abdy...

I've recently started a new role with Fugro, and it's the right thing for me to take a step back from See-Me Employability Coaching for a wee while.

I know myself pretty well these days - if took on more than I could (which I'm affa prone to do), I'd end up burning out and have the fear of letting people down.

Anyone that's followed me over the past 7 months, you'll see that I'm passionate about careers, employability and seeing people feel confident about what they have to offer. If I'm nae able to give those that need support 100%, it's not good for me or them.

So, for the forseeable anyway, I'm not going to be taking on any new clients. This doesn't affect anyone I'm currently working with, we'll continue as normal ๐Ÿ™‚

But, never fear, I know you all absolutely love my patter, so the sharing of world class videos, advice on employability and general careers chat will still be rife on your feed. Employability is something we all should have and I want to continue helping as many folk as possible.

Thank you to every single person that has supported me this year. From those that put their faith in me, people that followed my page, referred people to me and gave some superb advice.

I can easily say that there's more people now in a better position with how their CV represents them, with a tailored game plan for how they'll make the next steps in their career and know how to nail an interview based on how much of a legend they are!

Cheers, Mark

Top. Tip(s). Tuesday. Nae messing aboot, let's get stuck in.

First up. I know, we've all had bad work experiences and we're itching to call them out, sometimes deservedly so.

But, put yourself in the employers shoes here. You're ripping into an old boss, colleague or business, but all they've got is your side. Not that they won't believe you, but two sides and all that. Plus, if you're on one, you'll be coming across negative, which will not only set the tone for how you deliver the rest of your interview, but with a such a short space of time to interview, they aren't seeing the real you.

I should stress, this doesn't apply to severe cases of misconduct, but if you can, keep it positive. Say you felt let down, or didn't get the support you needed, but it's now turned into an opportunity. What is to be gained from that experience? What have you learned that you can use to better affect? What about the experience can you help your new employer with to support you better?

They get references on you, why shouldn't you be able to get on them.

Not necessarily the hiring manager or team, but the company as a whole. Contact people that are currently working for the business & ask what they love about working there? Is there anyone that worked with them or for them previously? Check online, social media, job board reviews.

I would stress, you do have to take what people say sometimes with a pinch of salt, because their experience, good or bad, might be very different to others. Get the information, do your research, be your own person and make the decision. This can apply to the application or at the interview stage.

Make sure it's the right move for you. Go in with an open mind, but don't go in with a blindfold.

Go forth and apply for jobs with confidence my friend.

Here you go. Are you sitting doon? Ready to take some notes? Here's your top tips for this week to support your job hunt.

It's all about sharing this week. With others and asking people share with you. Sharing is caring. Sharing helps us grow. Whether you're sharing or being shared to.

First up, when you can, The good, the amazing, the bad and the 'fit the hell was that'.

We're affa for thinking that we need to be a closed book when it comes to our job hunt. Dinna get me wrong, there's some stuff that needs to stay confidential, but we don't talk about our experiences, wins or mistakes enough with others.

We all have to apply for a job at some point in our lives, and seriously, it's nae difficult to do. But we approach it with a sense 'Am I doing this right?' The more we share, the more we help others AND the more we validate our own experiences as perfectly normal, learn and grow.

Talk about your job hunting experiences. This isn't meant to be a one person club you are in. Bring people on your journey. You'll enjoy it more.

And on that, secondly, 99% of recruiters will say that their enjoyment comes from knowing they are making a difference to others livelihoods.

Helping someone thrive in their career, find a job or develop, is easily one of the nicest things you can do for someone. Whether its paid for or nae, folk loving helping other folk.

If you're looking for a new job and need support but feel embarrassed asking for help, ask yourself this 'if someone came to you to ask for help in their career, would you turn them away??' I don't think you would.

People will want to help. Ask those that you know that might be able to, not just recruiters. Folk you know, people that you don't know. Do it respectfully, and patiently, but don't always sit there and do it on your own.

Top tip Tuesday, over and out!

Employability refers to your ability to gain initial employment, maintain employment, and obtain new employment if required.

Simply, it's about being capable of getting and keeping fulfilling work.

โ€œEmployability is having a set of skills, knowledge, understanding and personal attributes that make a person more likely to choose and secure occupations in which they can be satisfied and successful" Dacre Pool & Sewell 2007 (I've quoted them like I know who they are - I don't but thanks google)

Being employed is ace, but being employed and having employability skills is crucial?

Fancy a blether about it? I'm here!

This week's thoughts stems from the sad news of James Michael Tyler's, or Gunther from Friends, passing.

But it ties into so much more. We're affa bad for putting ourselves down or thinking that what we offer, doesn't have an impact.

You won't impact everyone, but you will impact someone by being you!

It might have been a TV show, it might have been a small part he had, He might have faded into the background for most of it, but everyone who's seen Friends knows who Gunther was and the value he added to that programme.

Changing Mindsets

In the past, my approach to job hunting was awful. Nae genuine approach, not enough effort, then blaming other factors for my lack of progress. When the only thing that needed to progress, was my own mindset.

That's what I want to do with Employability. To empower & inspire people to alter their mindset towards applying for jobs.

Because, no matter your circumstances, what you are away to do and what you will end up resulting with, is a positive.

And when we have more positive outlooks, we get more positive results. "Focus on the good & the good gets better" and all that.

Anyway, yep, reason 3, to change mindsets. If you've got 4 mins, a masterpiece of a video is one click away.

I know right? Where on earth is he going here. As I always ask though, bide with me. Please.

๐—™๐—ผ๐—ผ๐˜๐—ฏ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น - If pens are the only way to decide a winner, that means you've went through 120 gruelling minutes to get there. You're mentally drained, possibly knackered. You're nervous, but excited and despite the possible negative outcome, you're going to give this your best shot.
๐Ÿฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜„ - you've went through the whole process. Through the emotional rollercoaster of waiting, preparing, nervous knots in the stomach, excitement and got offered the 2nd interview. Now it's a shootout, normally between you and at least one other person.

You have to practice pens. Perfect your technique, where you want to hit the ball, study the goalkeeper you will be up against.
๐Ÿฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ - You have to prepare for interviews. What do you want to make sure you get across, what experience do you want to highlight, examples of where you've achieved & you need to know who is interviewing you.

Despite your best efforts with a penalty, it's a game of chance. Even if you get the ball right in the corner, if the keeper guesses right, it's out of your control.
๐Ÿฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ - You could smash the interview, put yourself across brilliant, build rapport, answer questions well, but ultimately, it's the hiring team that make the final decision. That's something you need to consider, you're not to blame if you've done your best and it doesn't pay off.

Taking a penalty is real pressure. All eyes are on you. But if you miss, you reflect, and head back to the training ground.
๐Ÿฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ - This is self-explanatory I think?

For the heart rate, it's better to win in 90 minutes. But is there a better feeling that going through those nerves, anguish before winning a dramatic penalty shootout?
๐Ÿฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ- Aye, we'd love to have one interview and get the offer. But that doesn't always happen. The emotional torture, the late nights preparing, the nerves leading up to the spot/office - is there a better feeling that receiving that offer knowing that you put absolutely everything into this, pushed past the fears and believed in what you had to offer??

There's very little point to this. It's not designed to change your life. I just thought the similarities were uncanny.

Any other relevant similarities?

Yesterdays Two Top Tips for your job hunt. All about getting the Cover Letter they way you deserve.

You ready???

Like, loathe or love them, cover letters are still an integral part of applying for jobs. But, actually, a good cover letter is just as important for YOU as it is for the person reading it at the other end. Brace yourself....

How many of us have seen the 'please submit a covering letter' request on an application form and thought 'For F*** Sake.....?'. Be honest.

You know why you feel that way? Most likely, this job isn't one you are absolutely desperate for. Yep, you're interested, possibly feel you have to apply for, but you're nae buzzing.

When you know there's a job, or a company, that you are perfect for, you've got the right experience & know you'd fit into what they are all about, writing a cover letter, from scratch, with belief is a piece of cake.

That doesn't mean you can't apply for a job if writing it doesn't flow, but if you feel you are struggling to communicate your 'why', then question, 'should I be applying?'.

And on that, 2) ๐—ช๐—ต๐˜† ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚ ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ฝ๐—น๐˜†๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด? That's what companies, recruiters and hiring managers want to see. Why are you, Joe or Jane Applicant taking time to apply for this role, this company, in this sector? Why?

Not just because you've got transferrable skills, have similar experience or can work well under pressure. Really why?

Decision makers have to go on faith that the person applying is 100% keen on this role & their company, so that no time is wasted in the interview process. Put yourself in their shoes, what would you want to read if someone was going to invest their time in you?

You'd want to be convinced that they'd give everything for you, right? So tell them & tell yourself. Why!!!
