Yesterday, I had a conversation with a woman who apologised to me three times in the space of twenty minutes!
She apologised for not knowing exactly what she wanted to do next, she apologised because her confidence wasn’t where it used to be, and then she apologised because she got upset talking about it.
Genuinely I wanted to crawl through the computer screen and give her a cuddle, because I knew EXACTLY where it was coming from.
She’d spent the last few years caring for her mother whilst quietly trying to hold onto the career she’d worked incredibly hard to build beforehand. Somewhere along the way, she’d convinced herself that she was somehow “behind”.
Behind who exactly?!
When I asked her if she even enjoyed what she was doing and wanted the possible promotion she was losing sleep over, the answer was no. Now, realising you’re climbing a ladder you don’t even want to be on anymore is a scary thing. Very scary.
One of the biggest privileges in my work is helping people to understand what they truly want, how that fits into their life now, and exactly how to get it.
Sometimes confidence needs rebuilding, sometimes priorities need to change, sometimes the career you wanted at thirty simply isn’t the one you want at forty and that’s ok. No, really…it is.
