A senior role for an experienced accountant who wants real ownership, client influence, and leadership responsibility.

We’re working with McKilligan Financial - Rural Family Business Accountants, a modern rural accountancy practice based between Banff and Keith, as they look to appoint a Senior Client Manager. Hybrid working available.

This role sits at the centre of client delivery.

You’ll manage a portfolio of clients, providing proactive advice across tax planning, structuring, compliance and wider commercial decision-making. You’ll also be responsible for reviewing work, supporting team members, and ensuring clients receive a consistently high standard of service.

Key areas include:
- Tax planning and advisory support
- Reviewing and finalising tax work
- Client relationship ownership
- Supporting team development
- Improving systems, processes and delivery
- Working closely with leadership on firm-wide improvement

There’s a strong emphasis on judgement, communication and commercial thinking, not just technical ability.

The client base is diverse, with a strong rural and agricultural focus, so the ability to understand or learn that sector will be important.

This is a genuinely unique role in a firm that is growing, evolving, and investing in its people and leadership structure.

If it never rained, would we appreciate the sunshine quite as much?

It’s an obvious thought, but one that has really stuck with me since moving back to Scotland from a country where daily sunshine is pretty much guaranteed.

But this also applies on a wider basis too. For example, without cold winters, summer loses some of its magic. Without setbacks, success would feel flat. Without difficult conversations, meaningful relationships rarely deepen.
And without the challenging days at work, the big wins don’t carry the same satisfaction.

Can you have too much of a good thing? I’m starting to think so. I don’t think the goal is to eliminate discomfort from life. Perhaps the goal is to recognise its role.

Some of the moments I’m most grateful for today only exist because of periods I’d rather not repeat. Poor health, kid’s struggles, career setbacks, those days at work where everything seems to go wrong.

Looking back, these were often the things that created perspective, and maybe that’s why the best chapters in life aren’t the ones where everything goes perfectly.

So if if find myself moaning about the weather, hard days at work, and family challenges, I try to remind myself that without these, the good times wouldn’t feel so good.

Have a lovely weekend.

If you’re a qualified accountant who enjoys being close to the numbers but equally values being part of the bigger picture, this could be worth exploring.

We’ve been exclusively retained to appoint a Finance Manager into a long-established, highly respected Scottish business based in Aberdeenshire.

Working alongside a highly capable Finance Director, this role takes on broad responsibility across financial reporting, controls, cashflow management, audit and compliance, while also supporting and developing a finance team and building strong relationships across the wider business.

There’s a strong technical foundation to the role, but what really matters is the ability to operate in a hands-on, fast-moving SME environment, where priorities shift, detail matters, and finance plays a key role in supporting better decision-making across the organisation.

At Vero Book Club we’re all about positive psychology, so we're kicking off June with The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor.

Achor explains how happiness fuels success, rather than the other way around. Through research, anecdotes, and practical exercises, he shows how optimism, social connection, and mindset shifts can improve performance at work and in life.

What I loved most is how actionable it is...little habits and mental shifts that can really change your day-to-day experience. It’s a reminder that success isn’t just about strategy or hard work, it’s also about how you approach the world and yourself.

If you want a mental reset half way through the year and some practical ways to feel better while doing better, this is the perfect book.

There’s a particular type of conversation I’ve always genuinely enjoyed having, and it’s with someone who has recently qualified as an accountant in practice and they’re wondering “what next”?

For many people, that first move from practice into industry feels far bigger than simply changing jobs. It can feel like stepping away from the structure and familiarity they’ve known for years into something much less defined, and with that often comes a lot of uncertainty around whether they’re making the “right” decision, whether they’re moving too early, too late, or whether they’re even ready at all.

The reality is, most people feel that way.

What I’ve always found rewarding is helping people slow the process down a little, think properly about what they actually want from their career (and life), and realise that this decision doesn’t need to be rushed or driven purely by salary, job title or external pressure.

Some people thrive in industry immediately. Others discover they genuinely enjoy practice and stay. Both are good outcomes.

But helping someone navigate that first big career crossroads with a bit more confidence and clarity is still one of the parts of this job I care most about.

A truly unique private client tax role with real variety and scope, offered on a fully remote, hybrid, or in office basis.

We’re supporting McKilligan Financial - Rural Family Business Accountants, a fast-growing rural accountancy firm based between Banff and Keith, as they look to appoint a Private Client Tax Manager.

This role goes well beyond compliance and you’ll be involved with:
- Income tax, CGT and IHT planning
- Agricultural and rural client advisory work
- Scottish partnerships and LBTT matters
- Succession and estate planning
- Reviewing returns and identifying planning opportunities
- Supporting wider restructuring and incorporation work

The key here is application, not just theory, using technical knowledge in a way that helps real business owners make better decisions.

You’ll also act as a technical go-to within the team, helping develop others and shaping how private client tax advice is delivered across the firm.

This is a great fit for someone who wants depth, autonomy, and a genuinely varied advisory portfolio within a close-knit, values-led environment.
