S/Y of the Day ⛵

Meet Kiwi Magic KZ7.

In 1987, Kiwi Magic was New Zealand’s first America’s Cup challenger. She was a glass-fibre 12 Metre in a fleet of aluminium boats, and so quick that rivals had her hull drilled to prove she was legal. In the semi-finals off Fremantle she beat France’s French Kiss 4–0. Thirty-nine years on, and the old rivalry is alive and well.

This month at Voiles de Saint-Tropez, the two met again. Kiwi Magic’s week didn’t start to plan. She spent Wednesday and Thursday off the water repairing her mast. The crew got her back out and finished strongly, level on points with French Kiss and Marc Pajot. Kiwi Magic took the class on the tie-break, thanks to two race wins.

A huge well done to Marianne Petersen and the crew. Every boat has a bad day, but it takes a good team to turn a broken week into a trophy.

You might have seen it in our monthly newsletter, but in case you haven't, we're proud to be supporting Karl Smith of Smith Ocean Projects as he prepares to race solo, non-stop around the world in the Global Solo Challenge 2027 ⛵

Karl left a career in accountancy in 2018 and started at the bottom, completing his Yachtmaster Offshore at 28 and working his way up through deliveries and instructing to captaining superyachts. In 2021, an accident at sea almost cost him his right foot. After several surgeries and a long recovery, he chose to go back to sailing and take on the solo offshore racing he had always wanted to do.

He's now sailing to raise more than €1M for Parkinson's, and attempting a significant Irish maritime first along the way. Karl is also looking for sponsors and in-kind partners to help get him to the start line.
