A beautiful, very red star

also known as Y Canum Venaticorum, AL Carbon Star 55

How to find "La Superba"

A. Find Zeta Ursae Majoris – also called Mizar –the next star to the end of the Big Dipper's handle.
B. Locate Cor Caroli, Alpha Canum Venaticorum, near the center of the handle's curvature.
C. Find 4.2 magnitude Beta to Alpha's northwest.
D. Draw a line between Zeta and Beta.
E. About 3/4 along this line shines La Superba.

Repeat every week. Do you notice a change in brightness and in color?

Appearance in binoculars or a telescope:
1. Between 4.8 and 6.3 magnitude
2. Redder than Betelgeuse.

Galileo Galilei was the first to turn a telescope toward the sky and truly look — discovering mountains on the Moon, the phases of Venus, and the moons of Jupiter. In doing so, he helped prove a powerful and unsettling truth: Earth is not the center of everything.

At a time when questioning the cosmos meant risking everything, Galileo chose curiosity over fear.

Every image of distant planets, every rover on Mars, every deep-space discovery we celebrate today traces back to that first brave decision to look up and ask, “What if we’re not at the center?”

Happy birthday to the father of modern astronomy.

Caldwell 05, IC 342 a nearby spiral galaxy

It is large and bright, but has a low surface brightness making the galaxy difficult to discern.

How to locate Caldwell 5 (IC 342)
• Triangulate with Capella and Mirfak.
• Identify Gamma Cam, which might be difficult to find. It is given away by its double nature, a 4.6 magnitude star and a 5.4 magnitude star separated by 28 minutes.
• Place Gamma near the north edge of a 5º field and IC342 will lie near the center of the lower half.
• IC342 has diameter of about 20 minutes with a somewhat brighter core.

Distance: 11 million light-years

Recommended Aperture:
Not less than 8 inches.

El telescopio de diseño Maksutov -Cassegrain es particularmente un telescopio sellado (con cámara de Nitrógeno) con doble funcionalidad: spotting scope (para visión terrestre por su prisma de Amici de imágenes erectas) con un ocular de 32mm (campo amplio de visión) de muy buena calidad y revestimientos UV intensos en OTA y ocular; además cambio del haz luminoso con un espejo en diagonal para pasar la imagen a posición del ocular (90°) para apuntar hacia los astros. Y también tiene como dotación un aditamento para acoplar una cámara tipo réflex.
Se limpian las pátinas (capas opacas sobre los cristales causadas, entre otras razones, por las diferencias de temperatura entre ambiente y superficie; y tipo de materiales) con soluciones químicas para minimizarlo. Se reparan los hilos de la mira (también de visión etecta).

El otro telescopio, Schmidt -Cassegrain, en cambio, tuvo reparación total: arreglo de trípode, circuito eléctrico de la mira. Además, reparación de uno de los motores por daño del 'piñón fusible', y suministro de otro motor por daño total del ubicado en la base.
Desarme completo para lavado de los cristales ópticos y su colimación.
