Creating an inclusive interview experience begins long before the conversation starts.

Take time to consider whether your interview space is welcoming and accessible for all candidates. Would someone using a wheelchair or mobility aid be able to move comfortably through the space? Is the location easy to access, with clear pathways and appropriate seating? Could the environment be overwhelming for someone with sensory sensitivities, such as bright lighting, strong scents, or excessive noise?

A candidate's ability to succeed in an interview should never be limited by barriers in the environment. Thoughtful planning helps ensure applicants can focus on showcasing their skills, experience, and potential.

When scheduling an interview, it's entirely appropriate to ask candidates if they require any accommodations during their visit. This simple question demonstrates respect, creates a more welcoming experience, and allows you to make any necessary arrangements in advance.

By proactively considering accessibility and inviting accommodation requests, employers send a clear message: everyone is welcome, valued, and given an equal opportunity to succeed.

“Different is not less” reminds us that disability is not a deficit. It’s a dimension of human diversity that enriches our communities, workplaces, and collective imagination.

Different is not less means:

- Talent doesn’t come in one format.
- Support is not charity, it’s infrastructure.
- Accessibility, accommodations, and inclusive design aren’t special treatment. They’re the tools that allow people to show up fully and succeed on their own terms.
- Lived experience is expertise.

People with disabilities bring knowledge that can’t be taught in a classroom like insight into systems, barriers, and solutions that make workplaces better for everyone.

Belonging is built, not assumed.

When we only accommodate what we can see, we risk excluding talented individuals who are quietly navigating complex realities.

and Invisible Disabilities Awareness Week remind us that inclusion must extend beyond what is visible, familiar, or easily understood.

Across our communities and workplaces, many people live with disabilities that aren’t immediately apparent; disabilities such as chronic pain, neurodivergence, mental health conditions, learning disabilities, sensory differences, autoimmune disorders, and more. When disability is invisible, barriers often are too.

Together let's rethink how we design environments where people can thrive:

- Believe people when they share their needs.
- Build accessibility into systems.
- Create workplaces where disclosure is safe, supported, and never penalized.
- Recognize flexibility, autonomy, and choice are essential accessibility tools.
- Value lived experience as expertise that strengthens teams and leadership.

Employment inclusion isn’t achieved by focusing only on what we can see. It grows when we acknowledge the full spectrum of disability, including the realities that are carried quietly every day.

When we expand our understanding of disability, we expand our capacity for equity, compassion, and innovation. And that’s how we build environments where people can show up fully and succeed authentically.

Many employees with invisible disabilities choose not to disclose their condition at work. They may worry about being judged or misunderstood, facing discrimination or exclusion, and/or losing opportunities for advancement.

Even in well-intentioned workplaces, when people feel they must keep a disability hidden, it can create unnecessary stress and make it harder to access the supports they need to succeed.

As we recognize Invisible Disabilities Awareness Week and , it's important to remember a disability may not always be visible. ADHD, autism, mental health disabilities, chronic pain, learning disabilities, and other disabilities may not be apparent to others, yet they can significantly impact a person's daily work experience.

Creating an inclusive workplace means building a culture where employees feel safe to be themselves, request accommodations when needed, and know they will be supported without fear of stigma or negative consequences. The goal isn't to encourage disclosure. It's to ensure that every employee feels respected, valued, and empowered to contribute in the way that works best for them.

Let's continue to challenge assumptions, lead with empathy, and create workplaces where people don't have to hide who they are to belong. Inclusion starts when we remove barriers, and foster psychological safety.

Hailey and Brittany attended the 2026 National Assembly for the Manitoba Métis Federation at Assiniboia Downs on October 16.

A special highlight was Hailey's chance to meet Manitoba Métis Federation President David Chartrand and have her photo taken with him. Moments like these create lasting memories and remind us of the value of community, representation, and coming together to celebrate.
