How to Ace a Telephonic Interview?

Attending a telephonic interview can feel nerve-wracking, as it differs significantly from in-person or video interviews. But don’t worry—we’ve got you covered! Here are some practical tips to help you prepare:

Before the Interview
1. Set Up a Quiet Environment
Just like with a video interview, ensure you’re in a quiet space with minimal background noise. Test your phone for strong signal strength beforehand. Keep your phone nearby, and be punctual to ensure you don’t miss their call.
2. Handle Unforeseen Circumstances Professionally
If an unexpected situation arises and you can’t attend the interview, respond politely:
“Thank you very much for your call. Unfortunately, I am currently unable to give my full attention. Would it be possible to reschedule?”
Follow up with a polite apology email to confirm the rescheduled time.
3. Research Thoroughly
Take time to learn about:
o The company’s values, culture, and goals
o The position you’ve applied for
o The job duties and requirements
4. Practice Common Questions
Prepare responses for common interview questions, such as “What attracted you to our company?” Use the STAR approach (Situation, Task, Action, Result) for situational questions.

During the Interview
1. Stay Calm and Positive
While phone interviews can feel less personal, maintaining a friendly and enthusiastic tone is essential. Stay calm and collected throughout the conversation.
2. Communicate Clearly
Since body language isn’t visible, your voice becomes your primary tool for effective communication. Speak slowly, clearly, and confidently.
3. Listen Actively
Allow the interviewer to finish speaking before responding. Demonstrating good listening skills can leave a lasting impression.
4. Ask Thoughtful Questions
Prepare a set of meaningful questions to ask the interviewer. This shows your genuine interest in the role and company.

After the Interview
1. Express Gratitude
End the call by thanking the interviewer for their time.
2. Send a Thank-You Email
Within 24 hours, send a follow-up email expressing appreciation for the opportunity and reiterating your interest in the position.

By following these tips, you’ll be well-prepared and confident for your telephonic interview. Good luck!

How should I prepare for a remote interview?

Appropriate locations:
Ideally at home in a quiet, private space. Somewhere you have access to the job description and a paper and pen to take notes.

Inappropriate locations:
On the street or an outdoor space with noise, on public transportation, in a car while driving, at a café, in a room with others present. You get the idea

Tips:
On a video call, presenting your appearance professionally is as equally important as an in-person interview.

If using a phone rather than computer, find a suitable spot to prop it up so you are not holding it.

Find a neutral background to use, and ensure there’s adequate lighting.
