Stay Hydrated!

As we age, our sense of thirst can decrease, making it easier to become dehydrated. Staying hydrated supports normal body functions and can help prevent problems associated with dehydration.

Simple hydration tips:

* Keep water within easy reach.
* Take small sips throughout the day.
* Include water-rich foods such as fruits and soups.
* Don’t wait until you feel thirsty to drink water
* If a healthcare provider has advised you to limit fluids, follow their guidance.

Watch for signs such as dark urine, reduced urination, dry mouth, dizziness, weakness or confusion. Severe dehydration can require urgent medical attention.

At Pillars of Support, we believe prevention starts with small, everyday actions.

2.Keep rooms, stairs, and hallways well lit
3.Wear well-fitting, non-slip footwear
4.Use prescribed mobility aids correctly
5.Stay active to maintain strength and balance

Did you know that Hand hygiene is one of the simplest and most effective ways to help prevent the spread of infections?
Whether you’re caring for an older adult, supporting someone at home, or simply going about your day, small actions can make a difference.

5 SIMPLE WAYS TO HELP PREVENT INFECTIONS

1. Wash your hands regularly
Wash with soap and water, especially before preparing or eating food, after using the washroom, after coughing or sneezing, before and after providing personal care.

2. Cover coughs and sneezes using a tissue or elbow.

3. Keep frequently touched surfaces clean

4. Stay up to date with recommended vaccines
Vaccination can help protect you and those around you from certain serious infections.
Immunization info: https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/vaccination-children.html

5. Stay home when you’re sick if possible

Note: Infection prevention isn’t just about protecting yourself. It is about protecting the people around you.

KNOW YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE NUMBERS!

You can feel perfectly healthy and still have high blood pressure. That’s why it’s important to check your blood pressure regularly. High blood pressure often has no noticeable symptoms.

What do the numbers mean?

Systolic (top number): Pressure when your heart beats.
Diastolic (bottom number): Pressure when your heart relaxes between beats.

Simple ways to protect your heart:
• Check your blood pressure regularly.
• Keep a record of your readings.
• Stay physically active.
• Reduce excess salt and highly processed foods.
• Avoid smoking.
• Manage stress and get adequate rest.
• Take prescribed medication as directed.

If your readings are repeatedly high, speak with a healthcare professional.

Dementia is NOT a normal part of aging.

Dementia can affect memory, communication, judgment, mood, behaviour, and the ability to perform everyday activities.

🚩 Some warning signs include:
• Frequently forgetting recently learned information
• Difficulty completing familiar tasks
• Trouble finding or using words
• Becoming confused about time or place
• Changes in judgment or decision-making
• Misplacing things in unusual places
• Changes in mood or behaviour
• Difficulty understanding visual or spatial information

Early recognition matters. If you notice concerning changes in yourself or someone you care for, speak with a healthcare professional. Only a qualified healthcare provider can determine whether symptoms are caused by dementia or another condition.

At Pillars of Support, we believe education, compassion, and dignity are essential when supporting individuals living with dementia and their families.
