Absence has a shape, and on most sites it's a stable one. Mondays run one way. The shift after payday runs another.

Where that gets interesting is the buffer. A standby list sized to the monthly average puts the same number of people behind a Tuesday as behind a Monday, which means one of those days is overcovered and the other still goes short.

Moving people rather than adding them closes most of that. Same headcount, sitting where the gap actually is.

We can read your absence data by day and by shift and tell you where that is: https://hubs.li/Q04x5knn0

Toronto's unemployment rate was 6.7% in July, down from a recent high of 9.0% in July last year. Ontario's rate fell to 6.8%, its lowest since July 2024, and the province added 52,000 jobs over the month.

If your last big intake was summer 2025, you hired at a point when far more people were looking. Postings filled fast and shortlists ran long.
That's not the market you're staffing into for this peak.

The same posting at the same rate won't pull what it pulled twelve months ago. Nothing about your operation changed. The pool it draws from got smaller.
Worth pressure-testing your peak plan against current rates rather than last year's experience.

Bill rate is the one you compare, because it's the one that arrives in a column.
The other three sit in operations: what you pay in overtime when a shift runs short, what your supervisor's week absorbs, and what a new starter costs before they're at full pace.
Suppliers get chosen on the first number and judged on the other three.
Worth comparing properly: https://hubs.li/Q04w7LG90

Fifty new starters need fifty inductions, and those hours come out of your best operators' shifts.

Bring them in as one group and your most experienced people spend peak training instead of producing. Phase the intake, and that cost stays off your busiest weeks.

Most workplaces have been running hot for so long that "urgent" stopped meaning anything. Everything gets the label, so nothing actually gets treated like a priority.

It starts with one question. When something lands marked urgent, ask what genuinely breaks if it waits until Friday. Most of the time, nothing does, and the person asking already knows it.
From there it's discipline. Keep one list the whole team can see, so urgent requests have to compete with what actually matters. And watch how long the pattern's been going. A team putting out fires for months isn't unlucky, it's absorbing a planning problem nobody fixed upstream.
Urgency should be the exception. If it's the default, that's what's worth fixing.

OHRT works with GTA employers on all three.

It's not a complicated fix. It's just one that requires someone paying attention to the whole process, not just their part of it.

That's what we're here for.

Temporary roles aren't just gap fillers.

For a lot of people, they're the smartest way into a company, especially when the employer gets to see what you bring before making anything official. If you're in a temp role and wondering what's next, it might be closer than you think.

The real test is month three.

The structured onboarding is over, the manager has moved on to other priorities, and the new hire is left to figure out the gaps on their own.

That's when the doubts set in. That's when the LinkedIn browsing starts.

On-Time HR Toronto stays in the picture after placement.

If something is slipping, we catch it before it becomes a resignation.

The hire isn't done when someone accepts. It's done when they're settled and planning to stay.

Scaling a business in the GTA is hard enough without a hiring process that can't keep up.

If any of those signs look familiar, it might be worth looking at how your workforce is actually being managed, not just filled. On-Time HR Toronto works with growing employers to build staffing structures that hold up under pressure.
