Today, on the International Day for People of African Descent, we honour the histories, cultures and contributions of African-descended people across the world.

This day is both a celebration and a call to action. Black communities should not have to rely on resilience to endure discrimination, exclusion and systemic anti-Black racism. We deserve to live with dignity, safety, opportunity and joy.

As we honour how far we have come, we remain committed to building a future in which the next generation can do more than survive, they can belong, flourish and live fully.

Gun violence is not only a crime and safety issue. It is also a public health, mental health, family, and community issue.

The disproportionate impact on Black communities in Canada deserves attention.

In 2022, Black people represented 4.3% of Canada’s population but accounted for 25% of fi***rm homicide victims. Among racialized homicide victims that year, 43% were Black.

In Toronto, 8 of the 10 neighbourhoods with the highest number of shootings are designated Neighbourhood Improvement Areas, communities experiencing structural disadvantages related to areas including health, income, education, and safety.

These numbers help us understand the scale of the issue, but they do not capture everything that happens afterward.

Families grieve. Survivors navigate trauma. Children and caregivers experience disruption. Communities can experience fear, loss, and a reduced sense of safety.

Black Circle of Care believes community responses to gun violence must also prioritize culturally responsive grief support, trauma informed care, family support, mental health resources, and long term community recovery.

Supporting people after violence is part of building safer communities.

Congratulations to the Black Circle of Care team and Adult Group participants on a successful first week!

Thank you to everyone who joined us, shared space, and helped build a supportive community rooted in care, connection, and understanding.

This first week was about building relationships, strengthening community, and creating space to explore what healing can look like.

Healing can take many forms, and it does not have to happen alone. Through community, we can create spaces where people feel seen, supported, and empowered to move forward.

Black Circle of Care is a culturally grounded, trauma-informed initiative creating spaces of care, connection, and healing for Black individuals, families, and communities impacted by gun violence.

Through the program, participants can connect through Youth & Adult Healing Groups, Peer-to-Peer Mentorship, Community Healing Circle Training, and Identity-Based Support.

At the heart of Black Circle of Care is a simple belief: when people have spaces where they feel seen, heard, understood, and supported, healing can happen in community.

Emancipation Day reminds us that freedom is more than a moment in history. It is a legacy of resilience, courage, and determination carried forward by generations of Black communities.

Today, we honour those who refused to let oppression define their humanity and celebrate the countless ways Black communities continue to lead, create, advocate, and inspire.

At Black Legal Action Centre, we believe the law should be a force for equity, accountability, and human dignity. Guided by that belief, we work alongside Black communities through legal advocacy, public legal education, law reform, and community engagement to help build a more just and equitable Ontario.

As we commemorate Emancipation Day, may we continue building communities where dignity is protected, rights are upheld, and justice is accessible to all. May freedom, equality, and opportunity continue to grow for generations to come.

We are proud to share highlights from the launch of the Black Justice Hub, a new online resource designed to help Black individuals, advocates, and legal professionals better navigate the justice system.

The Hub brings together accessible legal information, practical resources, and guidance across a range of legal issues, helping to break down barriers to justice and strengthen access to legal knowledge.

This project was made possible through funding from Justice Canada, and we are grateful to our partners, contributors, and everyone who joined us to celebrate this important milestone.
