What do you do when a resident refuses care? 💙
As a Personal Support Worker, this is one of the most delicate situations you’ll face and how you handle it says everything about the kind of caregiver you are.
Here’s what every PSW needs to remember 👇
✅ Always offer care — respectfully. A refusal doesn’t mean you stop. It means you pause, listen, and try again with kindness and patience.
✅ Explain the why. Help your resident understand why hygiene and personal care matter — not just for cleanliness, but for their health, comfort, and safety. When people understand the reason, they’re more likely to accept support.
✅ Give choices. Would you prefer a bath or a shower? Morning or afternoon? Small decisions give residents a sense of control and preserve their dignity — and that changes everything.
✅ Never rush or force. Dignity is not negotiable. Every resident deserves to feel respected, heard, and safe — even in their most vulnerable moments.
✅ Document and report every refusal. This is not just paperwork — it is part of delivering safe, high-standard care. Proper documentation protects your resident, protects you, and ensures the entire care team stays informed.
