You’re a long term prospect and potential investment in the eyes of the police service. It costs a considerable amount of money to recruit and train a new police officer. If you leave, you need to replaced!

This answer gets harder to navigate when you’ve applied to multiple services without success (especially if the service asking you this question isn’t your home town or first choice)

When you’re asked this question by a recruiter, are they really asking about your weakness or trying to find fault? No!
This question isn’t an attempt to discredit you or make you feel unqualified.

Your answer should show a true reflection of your personal limitations. This is followed up with an realistic discussion of how you're working to overcome this weakness. You may be struggling to overcome this weakness but the journey to success shows resiliency and maturity.

Resilience is built from struggle and self reflection. Your answer should NOT be a statement of a strength disguised as a weakness (such as overachieving).

Where do you begin?

Most people have a point in their lives where policing became a flicker of an idea.
This grew into a passion and journey.

This is a great starting point!

What occurred next? . . Hopefully you thought about the role, what would be expected of you and what would make you qualified.

Your decision was not impulsive and took considerable effort to be sitting in the very room you’ll be sitting in when this question is asked.

Consider speaking to the following:

Demonstrate that you understand the commitments, realities of the job and how you came to the decision to take on this role. Did you discuss it with your spouse and decide how it would effect your family?

Do not glamorize the job. How could you make a commitment to a role without considering all factors (good and bad). The job is very rewarding but also comes with many negative experiences which will stay with you forever.

Just like immigrating to another country or purchasing a home. You did considerable research, spoke to others, self reflected and made a calculated decision. The same applies with your commitment to policing. Maybe you interviewed officers you met in your journey!

If you plan to say you want to help your community, what does that look like? Is it always saving the day? It may be doing very mundane tasks over a 12 hour shift like directing traffic.

Have you done your research? What do you know of the service? Have you read the annual report? What have you done learn about the service? Who have you spoken to? Have you attended an information session?

The service is investing a great deal into you if you're hired. They are getting to know you and interested in you... shouldn't you be doing the same?

Would you buy a car without doing research? Likely not...you'd probably be comparing one car against another while asking people who own the car what they like about it…or even dislike.

Consider your ties to the community, your connection to the city and service. What can offer to the service. Interview officers by visiting the service. Going above and beyond shows a commitment.

Would you not expect the same if you were hiring someone?
