Applicants must show they can pay for their tuition fees, living expenses, and transportation costs for themselves and any accompanying family members. They are required to provide proof of funds for at least the first year of study and explain how they will finance the remainder of their program if it extends beyond one year. Immigration officers assess both the availability and source of funds to ensure students can sustain themselves throughout their studies.

Acceptable proof of financial support may include tuition payment receipts, education loans, scholarships, bank statements, Guaranteed Investment Certificates (GICs), proof of employment income, sponsorship letters, pension income, or rental income documents. As of September 1, 2026, a single applicant studying outside Quebec must demonstrate at least CAD $23,448 in living expenses for one year, excluding tuition and transportation costs, with higher amounts required for students bringing family members. Additional requirements may apply depending on the applicant's country of residence and study destination.

Canada and Chile are strengthening their partnership on critical minerals to support trade diversification, economic growth, and job creation. During the Conference of Mining Ministries of the Americas (CAMMA) in Santiago, Canadian officials met with government and industry leaders to advance collaboration on responsible mining, innovation, and critical mineral supply chains. The initiative builds on the 2024 Canada-Chile Memorandum of Understanding on Critical Minerals and Sustainable Development, which focuses on investment, technology development, workforce skills, and sustainable resource development.

Several new initiatives were announced as part of the partnership, including a five-year collaboration between Chile's state-owned copper producer Codelco and Canadian company MacLean Engineering to develop safer and more efficient underground mining technologies. Canada also committed support for critical minerals training programs across Latin America, provided up to $450,000 in research funding for a Canada-Chile innovation project, and announced a Canadian Cleantech in Mining Mission to Chile in October 2026. Together, these efforts aim to strengthen critical mineral supply chains, expand market opportunities for Canadian businesses, encourage innovation, and create long-term economic and employment benefits in both countries.

Canada has announced a new package of measures to support workers and businesses affected by recent U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods. In response to the U.S. imposing tariffs on $27.6 billion worth of Canadian products, the federal government will implement matching counter-tariffs on selected U.S. imports beginning September 8, 2026. At the same time, Canada is introducing a $7.5 billion support package to help businesses manage trade-related challenges, protect jobs, and strengthen economic resilience during a period of ongoing uncertainty.

The support package includes funding for small and medium-sized businesses, expanded access to business financing, investments through the Canada Strong Diversification Fund, and $3.5 billion in worker and employer supports, including Employment Insurance flexibilities, training initiatives, and workforce retention programs. The government says these measures will help affected industries remain competitive, support workers facing disruption, and encourage long-term economic growth by reducing reliance on a single trading partner and strengthening Canada's domestic economy.
