What is the Office of the Children’s Lawyer, and when might it become involved in a family law case?

The Office of the Children’s Lawyer (OCL) provides services for children under 18 in certain Ontario legal proceedings, including family law matters involving decision-making responsibility, parenting time and contact. (AFCC Ontario)

In some family law cases, a judge may request the involvement of the OCL. Depending on the circumstances, the OCL may assign a lawyer, a clinician, or both to assist with issues involving the child. The OCL ultimately decides whether it will accept a particular case.

The role of the OCL can vary depending on the matter, but its involvement is intended to help ensure that the child’s interests and circumstances are properly considered within the legal process.

Understanding when the OCL may become involved, and what its role may be, can be important for parents navigating a family law dispute involving children.

Meet Melania Soudouk, Associate at Walker Head Lawyers.

Melania is a member of the firm’s Estates and Trusts department, where she brings a thoughtful, client-focused approach to matters that can often be highly personal and sensitive.

Her interest in Wills and Estates developed while volunteering with the Pro Bono Students Canada GTA Wills Project, where she assisted with Wills and Powers of Attorney for underserved members of the community. She later became a project leader, working with estates lawyers and law students to help expand access to estate planning services.

Melania earned her J.D. from Osgoode Hall Law School in 2024 and was called to the Ontario Bar in 2025 after completing her articles at a boutique estates firm in Toronto. During law school, she also served as an associate editor of the Osgoode Hall Law Journal and worked as a student caseworker with Parkdale Community Legal Services.

As we continue introducing the people behind Walker Head, we are pleased to highlight Melania and the perspective she brings to our Wills, Estates & Estate Litigation team.

If you have questions about an estate or estate planning matter, contact Walker Head Lawyers to speak with Melania or another member of the team.
