👁️ Ever heard of an orthoptist?

Today is World Orthoptic Day, a perfect time to spotlight these essential vision care professionals! Orthoptists specialize in how your eyes move and work together. They’re often the first to assess issues like strabismus (eye misalignment), amblyopia (lazy eye), double vision, or trouble focusing up close.

In this new resource, certified orthoptist Vaishali Mehta and pediatric ophthalmologist Dr. Annick Fournier (CHEO) break down how orthoptists support patients of all ages and work closely with ophthalmologists to improve care.

✔️ How orthoptists help improve vision
✔️ Their role in diagnosis, treatment, and recovery
✔️ Tips on non-surgical care like patching or prism therapy

Eye care is a team effort and orthoptists are a vital part of it.

As part of Vision Health Month, the Vision Health Partners’ Coalition (VHPC) is calling on the federal government to fund implementation of Canada’s National Strategy for Eye Care (Bill C-284, Royal Assent November 2024).

More than 2.2 million Canadians live with vision impairment, and the economic burden is projected to reach $56 billion by 2050. Yet one in three adults skips recommended eye exams, often resulting in late-stage diagnoses, that are more difficult and costly to treat. Vision loss affects children’s learning, workforce productivity, and older adults’ independence.
