What does mean to you?

To us, it means creating, fostering and celebrating safe, inclusive workplaces where everyone can show up as themselves—without fear of judgment, harassment or loss of employment.

For , we want to share some highlights of things we’re doing to make Excel HR a safe and inclusive workplace. And since we’re always open to learning and growing on this journey, we’d love to hear about the ways you’re fostering inclusivity at your workplace–please share below!

Creating opportunities and safe spaces to learn
- This month, members of our team will be learning about the q***r and trans experience, the ABCs of the 2SLGBTQIA+ acronym, the practice of sharing pronouns, and more through an exclusive workshop hosted by Bloom.
- We hosted an interactive session on intersectionality last fall for our team, highlighting what “minority” could look like, exploring how our team members self-identify, and starting the conversation on lived experience and how it shows up in our daily lives. (The session was modelled on an exercise featured in this video, if you’d like to try it yourself: https://lnkd.in/drrAiV3)

Building inclusive HR practices
- Through stay interviews and quarterly check-ins, our leaders create a structured, safe way for two-way conversations in which team members can share concerns or suggestions to foster inclusivity.
- Clothing can be a fun way to express your identity. As a remote-first organization, we’ve moved beyond a dress code and encourage our team to wear what they’re most comfortable in and what feels most like them.
- When it comes to inclusion, language matters. That’s why we use gender-neutral language in our communications and encourage employees to include pronouns in their professional lives if they’re comfortable doing so.

Making an impact, together
- Last year, we partnered with Egale Canada to provide 20 students with a special backpack designed by Coast Salish, Musqueam artist Leila Stogan. Each backpack was filled with a range of items to foster health, wellbeing, and learning.
- This year, we’ve partnered with them once again to make an impact for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth in Canada. Stay tuned for details in the coming weeks!

These are just a few of the steps we’ve taken on our journey, with more to come as we continue to celebrate diversity, equity and inclusion every day of the year!

ICYM our news last week, this auction is our CEO and co-founder Kathryn Tremblay’s way to elevate diverse, talented artists in our community while boosting healthcare in Ottawa for generations to come and saying thanks for the excellent care the hospital provided to her late husband and co-founder, Toni Guimaraes, who passed away from prostate cancer in 2016.

Many thanks to Carrie Colton, Gallery Principal at Studio Sixty Six, for donating her time and expertise to carefully curate these artworks, with support from WALL SPACE GALLERY and FRAMING and Galerie St-Laurent + Hill.

Through regular conversations with federal government leaders, we’ve learned how keen they are to try new ways of fostering greater equity, diversity and inclusion ( ) in the public service.

Like these leaders, we feel strongly that our workplaces should reflect the diversity of Canada.

We’ve summarized some of the top issues that came to light through our conversations about EDI. We also included 19 possible actions for public sector leaders —some practical food for thought to fuel their diversity and inclusion journey.
